Liverpool fans told interest in Nico Schlotterbeck ‘wide of the mark’ despite rumours

Liverpool needed an extra defender to strengthen their backline this season.

The Reds spent over £400 million on players in this summer’s transfer window but missed out on adding Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi to the total, which could have completed a rebuild of their backline.

So it is no wonder they are in the market for a centre-back in the next windows, especially after Giovanni Leoni’s season-long injury and some of their defensive fragilities this season.

When rumours of Nico Schlotterbeck being seen as a likely candidate to be considered by Arne Slot’s side, fans were obviously excited by the prospect of bringing such a talent from Borussia Dortmund to Merseyside.

The German is one of Europe’s premier talents and has made an impression at 25 in the backline of the club.

Nico Schlotterbeck to Liverpool rumours ‘wide of the mark’ journalist claims

He is valued at around £60 million according to reports from Sky Sports Switzerland, and it will likely be around that price, given how highly rated he is.

The situation with the player, though, has now been made slightly unclear after reports suggested Liverpool would make an offer for Schlotterbeck; however, another reporter in Germany has now ruled this out.

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany has taken to X to report that rumours of the Merseyside club making an offer for the player are ‘wide of the mark’.

He wrote: “Rumours linking Liverpool with Nico Schlotterbeck are wide of the mark. There are no concrete plans regarding a LFC move for Schlotterbeck in the next two windows.

“Borussia Dortmund want to extend beyond 2027. FC Bayern interested. Top defender.”

While there is no clear idea of whether Liverpool will commit to putting a bid in at this time, the conflicting reports certainly show that this is a developing situation which likely will only become clear nearer January.

Bayern Munich interest in Nico Schlotterbeck could help Liverpool

While it would be a shame not to sign a player like him, with the interest from Bayern Munich, it would actually be a positive for the Reds’ more likely pursuit of Dayot Upamecano.

The Frenchman will become a free agent in the summer of 2026 when his contract runs out at Munich, with Liverpool one of the suitors for his signature.

Both players would be perfect additions, but Upamecano would be an ideal replacement if Ibrahima Konate is set to leave on a free transfer next year.

The interest from Munich in Schlotterbeck could be a good sign for Slot’s side to up their interest and pursuit of the 26-year-old French international.
