Gary Neville has always been critical of Liverpool ever since leaving Manchester United.

Since then, the Red Devils legend has taken every jab he possibly can at the Anfield outfit, with Jamie Carragher often the one on the other side of the conversation.

However, after Liverpool won the Premier League title last season, it wasn’t Carragher who made the former England right-back change his mind about Manchester United’s recent struggles.

Instead, it was the fact that Arne Slot managed to skip the transition phase at Liverpool entirely, whereas Manchester United still seem to find themselves transitioning, even though Sir Alex Ferguson retired years ago.

Gary Neville now thinks that Manchester United may not have needed a transitional phase after Sir Alex Ferguson

When Jurgen Klopp exited Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season, nobody expected the Anfield outfit to be as dominant as they were last term.

However, Slot defied the odds as he came in and managed to bring the title to Merseyside at the first time of asking.

Of course, Mohamed Salah’s incredible individual performances across the term will have helped him along the way, but in reality, he just inherited Klopp’s team and ran with it.

And now, while speaking on the Stick to Football Podcast, Gary Neville questioned what Manchester United should have done differently after Ferguson retired.

“There was always going to be a drop-off, wasn’t there,” Keane said.

Neville then replied: “Was there, Roy? To be fair, I say that, and then I look at what Slot’s done after Klopp, I know it wasn’t quite the same dynasty …that changed my mind a little bit.

“After (Arsene) Wenger (at Arsenal) there was a drop-off. After Klopp I was expecting there to be a drop-off, but there wasn’t.

“So what could’ve been done there, in terms of this massive problem that’s been created for the club?”

Arne Slot must get Liverpool back to their best before it’s too late

After spending over £400 million in the summer, many expected Liverpool to be untouchable this season.

However, that’s been far from the case with the club now on a three-game losing streak across all competitions.

In fact, many are now questioning whether spending £116 million on Florian Wirtz this summer was even worth it at all.

But, if last season’s performances are anything to go by, it’s clear that Slot can make things work with Joe Hart even admitting that Liverpool and Slot have the capabilities to turn things around.
