Liverpool have long been linked with a whole host of centre-backs.
Most people expected them to get the transfer of Marc Guehi over the line during the summer transfer window, but in the end, that fell through at the final hurdle.
This wouldn’t be all that much of a problem in a normal season, but since Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate are miles off their best this term, having just three centre-backs available is a cause for concern.
Indeed, things would be slightly better if Giovanni Leoni hadn’t torn his ACL, but unfortunately, that’s how it’s panned out.
This is why several centre-backs such as Dayot Upamecano and Gleison Bremer have been linked with an Anfield switch over the last month or so.

However, after what’s just happened with Bremer at Juventus, they may be down to just one option.
Gleison Bremer is set to undergo surgery for a knee injury
Bremer was one of the Serie A’s best centre-backs, with Juventus forking out around £45million to sign him, but his recent injury could massively hinder his progress.
Indeed, he was a tad older than the Reds’ usual targets at 28 years old, but his quality was undeniable.
The initial links came shortly after Leoni was ruled out for the season, but over the last couple of weeks, talks have died down.
And, after the injury update that Fabrizio Romano shared via his personal X account, it’s hard to see them picking up any time soon.
“Gleison Bremer has suffered an injury to the medial meniscus of the left knee,” he wrote.
“In the next few hours, Juventus defender will undergo surgery as club confirms.”
Liverpool may have to put all their efforts into signing Dayot Upamecano
One thing that has been made clear during the 2025-26 season is that the Reds may need some new centre-backs soon.
Although Gomez and Konate have been reliable over the last few years, it now feels like a change is needed in that department.
And, the fact that Upamecano, who was once dubbed “exciting” by Per Mertesacker, is set to be a free agent this summer, makes a potential deal 10 times sweeter.

Indeed, Guehi is another valid option for Liverpool to explore, but with clubs such as Real Madrid and Inter Milan now interested in the Englishman, it’s unclear whether another agreement will be reached between him and Liverpool.
It’s anyone’s guess what the future has in store, but if Liverpool end up missing out on both Guehi and Upamecano this summer, some serious questions will have to be asked.
