Virgil van Dijk is one of the main reasons behind Liverpool’s success over the last few years.
When speaking to his opponents, most of them will say that the Dutchman is one of the toughest defenders they’ve ever faced.
His commanding presence, coupled with his exceptional defensive awareness, are just two of the things that make him as good as he is.

Without him among their ranks, it’s unclear where Liverpool would be at the moment, but one thing is for sure: he’ll be a massive miss when he does eventually choose to exit Anfield.
Memphis Depay thinks that Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders ever
Although it may have taken him a while to get his big move, the Dutchman has proven that he was worth every single penny of the £70million that Liverpool chose to spend on him.
He completely transformed the Reds’ defensive line and, no matter who he’s partnered with, he always makes them better.
Whether it be Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate, or even Joel Matip, each of the trio were better players when they had Van Dijk alongside them.
Next season, the defender will be in the final year of his deal with Liverpool again, and at the moment, it’s unclear whether his stay will be extended or not.
However, since he’s now coming up on his 10th anniversary with the Dutch national team, his teammate, Memphis Depay, has lauded the defender and dubbed him one of the best ever.
“When he [Van Dijk] finishes his career, you will undoubtedly talk about one of the best ever,” he said to the OnsOranje TikTok.
Virgil van Dijk must help get Liverpool back to winning ways
Although his performances haven’t dropped off this season, it’s clear that Liverpool need some extra motivation to get back on track.
Now that they’ve lost their last two Premier League games, they’ve dropped to second in the top-flight table with Arsenal sitting above them by one point.
Both clubs spent an obscene amount of money on new players in the summer, with Mikel Arteta somehow managing to bolster his defensive line even more.
However, if Liverpool want to retain the title and perhaps even win the Champions League, they’re going to have to get back to winning ways as soon as possible.

Van Dijk can help his team do this by trying to keep his defensive line together and ensuring that mistakes aren’t made.
However, with Konate now pulling out of France’s national squad and Milos Kerkez still not meeting expectations, that could be easier said than done.
