Jurgen Klopp once called him to join Liverpool but now he’s only played one minute all season

Liverpool have had their fair share of dodgy transfers over the years.

Most of the time, however, things end up working out, and most players that the Reds have brought in have turned out to be successful.

Some, such as Mohamed Salah, have been much more successful than others, but, in their own way, every player who has been welcomed through the Anfield doors has had an impact on the club.

Of course, when a transfer doesn’t work out, it’s far from ideal and can often leave clubs struggling due to the lack of form players find themselves in.

With this in mind, the 2025-26 season will be make or break for Liverpool as they’ve spent over £450million on new players.

However, it was a transfer in 2020 that would’ve done irreversible damage to Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Timo Werner’s transfer to Liverpool fell through due to the coronavirus after Jurgen Klopp called him to ask him to join

Although most of the signings that Klopp made ended up working out, there have been some which have had question marks hanging over them.

And, if we’re being honest, the arrival of Timo Werner would have had a massive question mark hanging over it, especially with how his stints in England have gone since the Reds’ interest.

The attacker ended up joining Chelsea during Todd Boehly’s initial takeover and, although he did manage to produce the odd moment of class here and there, more often than not, he’d miss the target.

To be fair to the German, his versatility would have been very useful to the Anfield outfit, but aside from that, it feels like Liverpool dodged a bullet.

This is rather fortunate, as, according to a report from Sky Sports, Klopp had even phoned up the attacker to convince him to join, which shows how serious he was about getting the move to go through.

What Timo Werner is doing with his football career at the moment

After his stints with Chelsea and Tottenham failed to live up to expectations, he ended up returning to RB Leipzig.

Last term, while still playing for Tottenham, he appeared 27 times for the Premier League outfit and only contributed to four goals across all competitions.

And, to make things even worse, since the 2025-26 season kicked off, the 29-year-old has only played one minute of football for RB Leipzig.

Even as a backup, this is well below the usual amount of playing time with Federico Chiesa even getting more minutes than him this term.

It’s clear that things haven’t gone quite the way that Werner would have wanted throughout his career, but to be honest, this feels like an all-time low.

So, even though Liverpool aren’t performing at their best, at the moment, at least they don’t have someone such as Werner taking up a valuable place on their bench or even trying to get into Slot’s starting XI.
