Liverpool should have signed ‘unbelievable’ ace instead of Milos Kerkez this summer, he would have been perfect

Liverpool have performed well below par in their last three games.

Many expected the Anfield outfit to be the team to beat once again this season, but, in reality, it doesn’t feel like they’ll even be close to retaining their title.

At the start of the 2025-26 season, things were going well with Liverpool managing to win their first five Premier League games.

Since then, however, things have taken a turn for the worse with several members of the team performing well below their usual standards.

Milos Kerkez is one of the Reds’ players who feels like a waste of money at the moment.

The left-back has been prone to making mistakes ever since he joined the club, and with the way that Slot is setting Liverpool’s starting XI up at the moment, Andy Robertson feels like the better choice at left-back.

Which is why it feels like there may have been a way better option for Liverpool, ready for the taking, than Kerkez this summer.

Antonee Robinson could have been the answer to all of Liverpool’s problems

Last season, Antonee Robinson and Kerkez were seen as two of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

Liverpool have been linked with the US international for years, with some rumours even cropping up during the summer transfer window.

In the end, however, Slot chose to sign Kerkez instead despite Fulham’s manager, Marco Silva, dubbing the defender “unbelievable.”

The Cottagers already play in a similar style to Slot, as Silva uses a 4231 formation.

This formation allows Robinson to get involved with attacks, but also be covered by his teammates at the same time.

In Kerkez’s case, however, Andoni Iraola used him more like a winger, with the Hungarian given free rein to bomb up the wing as much as he liked.

However, since all three of Liverpool’s midfielders are rather attack-minded, when Kerkez does this now, too much pressure is put onto Ibrahima Konate, which causes mistakes to be made.

Robinson is injured at the moment, so he likely hasn’t played as much football as he’d have wanted to this season, but even just looking at some of his performances from last season, it’s clear that he would’ve been the much better option.

Arne Slot needs to figure out another way to set Liverpool up before it’s too late

Now that the summer transfer window is closed, Slot is going to have to work with what he’s got until at least the January transfer window.

Indeed, Liverpool still have Robertson, who can put in a shift at left-back, but, after spending £45million on Kerkez, it’s unlikely that they’ll want to use the Hungarian as a back-up.

Although the way that Slot set Liverpool up last season worked well, it’s clear that his current crop of players need to be used in a different way to get the best out of them.

For example, since the club spent over £450million on new signings this summer, they now have almost two world-class players in every position, with Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike both likely to be used out of position at one point or another.

If Slot can’t manage to figure out a way to get the best out of players soon, he may as well kiss Liverpool’s title chances goodbye.
