What happened last time Liverpool lost three in a row should fill Reds supporters with hope

Liverpool are in the thick of their worst run of form for two-and-a-half years after recording a third straight loss in all competitions.

It has been a chastening week for Arne Slot and his players, with the Reds stung by back-to-back stoppage time winners in the Premier League.

Throw a midweek loss against Galatasaray into the mix, and Liverpool fans are desperately unhappy heading into the international break.

In truth, it is not just the results which are causing concern. Arguably of greater worry are the performances, which have been poor right from the start of the season.

Nevertheless, Liverpool have had bad runs before, and they will again. It is all part and parcel of the game. What is now important is how Slot and the Reds react to their trio of defeats.

The last time Liverpool lost three on the bounce was under Jurgen Klopp in the nightmarish 2022/23 campaign. But what happened after that unwanted hat-trick should give Slot and Liverpool supporters hope for a resurgence.

Liverpool went on unbeaten run after bad defeats

Nobody of a Liverpool persuasion will enjoy looking back on the 22/23 campaign. There were virtually no redeeming features about a season in which the Reds finished fifth in the Premier League table.

Perhaps the only positive from the whole campaign was Liverpool’s run of form at the end of the season.

After looking so miserable for so long, Liverpool almost sneaked into the Champions League places thanks to an 11-game unbeaten stretch between April and May.

Interestingly, that purple patch came on the back of the last time Liverpool tasted three straight defeats.

The Reds lost 1-0 at Bournemouth and were beaten by the same scoreline during the Champions League last-16 second-leg against Real Madrid in the midweek fixture.

Klopp’s time at Liverpool then hit a new low as his team were soundly beaten 4-1 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on April 1st 2023. Three days later, ironically, they ground out a 0-0 at Stamford Bridge, before embarking on an impressive run of form.

A 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Anfield was followed up with a seven-match winning run before two draws finished out the season. Same again please, Liverpool.

When did Liverpool last lose four in a row?

While three losses on the bounce are difficult to stomach for Liverpool fans, making that four against Manchester United on October 19th would be somewhat disastrous.

You have to go back almost 11 years for the last time Liverpool lost four straight games in all competitions.

That arrived under Brendan Rodgers in November 2014, when three Premier League defeats were again spliced in with a 1-0 loss at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid.

That run also included a 2-1 loss against Chelsea, this time at Anfield, while the Reds were beaten away at Newcastle to kick the run off on November 1st 2014.

In another worrying omen, Liverpool went to Crystal Palace and lost 3-1, before a 2-2 draw away at Ludogorets in the Champions League ended the run.
