Ryan Gravenberch gives verdict on how good Giorgi Mamardashvili really is after watching him in Liverpool training

Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to come under the microscope at Liverpool as he finally prepares to make his Premier League debut.

The Georgian has gone under the radar a little since his arrival in 2024, firstly sent out on loan and then eclipsed by shinier, more expensive additions.

Nevertheless, Alisson Becker is facing around six weeks out with an injury, meaning the spotlight has fallen on Mamardashvili ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Chelsea.

Liverpool fans have already had a glimpse into the qualities of their new goalkeeper.

Mamardashvili enjoyed a good debut in the Carabao Cup and then looked assured when stepping in for Alisson during Tuesday’s Champions League defeat at Galatasaray.

But Saturday will give supporters their first opportunity to see Mamardashvili in a game that really, truly matters. Ahead of the fixture, Ryan Gravenberch has explained that what he’s seen in training from the No. 25 means he has no worries about him stepping up.

In some ways, the job of a back-up goalkeeper is one of the most thankless tasks in football.

Most of the time, you know the key fixtures are going to pass you by, but you always have to be ready on the off-chance that the main man is going to drop.

One way of doing that is by ensuring your level remains high in training. And according to Gravenberch, Mamardashvili has been doing exactly that.

“We know Ali is a big loss because, for me, he’s the best ‘keeper in the world,” the Dutchman admitted to Liverpoolfc.com.

“But we know with Giorgi, he showed already what quality he has. Also in training he’s really good. I know he will do really good for us.

“I’m happy for him that he will make his Premier League debut and I’m really looking forward [to it] for him.”

Gravenberch ready for Stamford Bridge debut

Saturday also represents a debut of sorts for Gravenberch. The 23-year-old is yet to play at Stamford Bridge despite now entering his third season with the Reds.

Gravenberch was not even a Liverpool player when Jurgen Klopp’s team head to Chelsea on the opening day of the 2023/24 campaign, and was given a rare rest by Arne Slot for last season’s match.

As a result, the No. 38 says he is really looking forward to stepping out and taking on the challenge of one of the Premier League’s toughest away grounds.

“We know Chelsea has a really good team, really good players,” said Gravenberch. “I know it will be tough.

“It’s actually my first time playing at Stamford Bridge, I haven’t played there yet, so I’m really looking forward to it. We will prepare well.”
