Liverpool’s record without Alisson Becker as goalkeeper prepares to bring up full season of missed games

Liverpool will be without Alisson Becker for Saturday’s trip to face Chelsea after the goalkeeper pulled up with an injury in midweek.

Alisson has often missed big games for the Reds since his arrival in 2018, and will do so again in what has become a must-not-lose match this weekend.

Unfortunately, reports have suggested that Alisson will be injured until mid-November, leaving Liverpool to rely on untested back-up keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in his place.

Mamardashvili was signed for exactly this eventuality, with Liverpool’s decision to bring in a top-level number two set to be vindicated in the coming weeks.

The Reds have coped without Alisson before, and the fact they spent relatively heavily on his new understudy suggests they were prepared to have to do it again.

For Mamardashvili, he has big gloves to fill after Caoimhin Kelleher’s summer departure. As Alisson sits out again, the Georgian will aim to prolong what is a surprisingly good Liverpool record without their first-choice goalie.

Liverpool have impressive win percentage without Alisson

There is no way in which Liverpool losing Alisson to injury can be painted in an especially positive light.

The 32-year-old is one of the very best goalkeepers in the world and has already proven that again this season.

However, Liverpool fans will be intrigued to see Mamardashvili get his chance, and the fact that the Reds’ defence is already used to coping without Alisson does soften the blow.

As the Premier League posted on X this week, Liverpool actually have a higher win percentage without Alisson than with him, albeit from a much smaller sample size.

Alarmingly, the sample is not as small as it should be, though. Saturday’s game will be the 38th Alisson has missed in seven-and-a-bit seasons with Liverpool. That is a complete Premier League season out injured.

Liverpool have so far won 73% of those 37 matches, compared to a 66% win percentage in the 235 fixtures with Alisson between the sticks.

They do let in more without the big Brazilian – 1.3 goals per game to 0.9 – but have posted a better points per game total of 2.4 against 2.2.

Liverpool hoping to continue title-winning tradition

Interestingly, two of the seasons in which Alisson has missed the most matches, 2019/20 and 2024/25, are the two in which they went on to win the Premier League title.

The No. 1 played only 28 league games last term, and 29 six years ago, with Adrian and then Kelleher filling in admirably.

If the timescale is correct and Alisson is set to sit out until after the November international break, he will be absent for five Premier League fixtures. Perhaps that can be a good omen for Liverpool in some warped way.

Amazingly, Alisson has only ever completed every Premier League game for the Reds once; in his very first season at Anfield.

They have managed without him before, but the jury is still out on how effectively Mamardashvili can replace the Brazil star.
