Cody Gakpo reveals his two best friends in the Liverpool squad who aren’t Dutch

Cody Gakpo has had a tough start to life as a Liverpool player in the 2025-26 season.

The Dutchman is now the Reds’ starting left-winger, seeing as though Luis Diaz chose to pack his bags for pastures new in the summer.

And, although most fans thought Gakpo would rise to the occasion and fill the gap left by the Colombian, that unfortunately hasn’t been the case, with some calling for Rio Ngumoha to start over him.

However, despite his poor run of form, that hasn’t stopped him from developing plenty of strong relationships with his current crop of teammates.

And now, the attacker has revealed who he’s actually close to at Liverpool, and it’s not who fans will likely think.

Although plenty of changes took place at Anfield this summer, the core of the team stayed the same.

Indeed, several players were brought in to try and bolster their ranks, but when looking at the squad in general, a lot of it has stayed the same.

The main area of change has been the Reds’ attack, with Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike both being welcomed through the Anfield doors.

Although fans may have thought that more changes needed to be made in the summer, the fact that most of Arne Slot’s first-team squad has stayed the same means that relationships between the players have been able to develop further.

And, while talking to VERSUS’ TikTok, Gakpo revealed the two Liverpool players he’s closest to.

“So I have Jordan Teze that plays for Monaco, Denzel Dumfries who plays for Inter.

“In the current squad, I think the Dutch boys and Curtis [Jones] and Ibou [Konate].”

Liverpool need to get their act together as soon as possible

Liverpool may still be sitting at the top of the Premier League table, but that doesn’t mean that things can’t be improved.

Their last two games against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray have been well below their usual standards, with Liverpool’s weaknesses being shown for everyone to see.

Of course, players can’t be specifically blamed for the Reds’ poor performances, but unless some, such as Gakpo, don’t manage to get back to their best soon, things could go from bad to worse at Anfield in an instant.

Saturday’s Premier League game against Chelsea will be a massive test of their strength and their ability to bounce back after a forgettable couple of games.

If they don’t manage to beat Enzo Maresca’s men or at least put up a decent fight on Saturday, Slot will have some serious questions to answer.

That is, especially with the amount of money they’ve spent this summer.
