Liverpool may have made a £35m mistake that could end up costing them the Premier League title

Liverpool spent over £400million on new players in the summer transfer window.

Many expected the Anfield outfit to walk all over every opponent they face this season.

However, with the way things seem to be panning out at the moment, that doesn’t feel all that likely.

Players such as Alexander Isak are still not fully fit, and others such as Florian Wirtz have failed to live up to expectations.

Although the aforementioned duo are two of the biggest culprits for this, some other players among Arne Slot’s ranks have also performed well below par.

Liverpool were in the market for several players in the summer, and while they signed most of them, there was one who got away.

Liverpool could end up missing out on the Premier League title after not signing Marc Guehi

As mentioned, most people expected Liverpool to easily win the Premier League and Champions League this season.

And, while they may still be first in the top-flight table, their performance against Galatasaray on Tuesday won’t have filled fans with much confidence for the rest of the season.

However, one player who has been consistently bad this term is Ibrahima Konate.

The centre-back has played well below his usual standards, and since the Reds missed out on Marc Guehi in the summer, the Frenchman has little to no competition for his place.

This means that no matter how badly he performs, he’s still likely to be chosen to play each week, which is why it could end up costing Liverpool the Premier League title.

Marc Guehi would have been Liverpool’s most important transfer this summer

After Liverpool sold Jarell Quansah in the summer, it was clear that new defenders were going to come in.

Indeed, Giovanni Leoni was signed first, and while he’d have been a solid option to replace Konate at the moment, the Italian managed to get injured and tore his ACL, ruling him out for the season.

This is why signing Guehi in the summer could’ve ended up being one of Slot’s most important additions.

The Englishman is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, and the £35million fee they were willing to pay would have been an absolute steal.

Of course, in the end, it wasn’t meant to be, but by the time the end of the 2025-26 season comes around, it’ll be interesting to see whether fans actually think Guehi’s arrival would have made any difference at all.
