Arne Slot stock continuing to rise at Liverpool despite what’s just happened

Liverpool haven’t played to the best of their abilities over the last week or so.

They’ve managed to lose their Premier League winning streak and have even been beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Most fans and pundits expected the Anfield outfit to walk all over their competitors this term, but at the moment, it feels like their first few wins were just pure luck.

The Reds still have a lot of players who need to get used to one another, and although this is bound to take time, fans were likely expecting to see more from their team at this point in the season.

However, despite the performances they’ve put in, Arne Slot has been handed some praise by Pat Nevin.

Last term, Slot massively overachieved with Liverpool cruising to the Premier League title.

This summer, plenty of changes occurred at Anfield, which saw the likes of Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott exit the club.

Although fans felt like their team was stronger due to the players they’d just brought in, at the moment, that isn’t the case.

And, while writing for the BBC Sport website, Nevin shared his honest thoughts on Slot and how he feels he’s doing this season.

“Liverpool boss Arne Slot was annoyed by a few things this week, and losing in the 97th minute would test any manager’s patience,” he wrote.

“He has, however, once again impressed with his unwillingness to spin a problem with a player.

“The other week, he hooked Milos Kerkez in the first half after a ridiculous dive, making it clear he felt that it was beneath the dignity of the club.

‌”During the week, Hugo Ekitike got sent off for removing his shirt after scoring the winner in the 85th minute.

“Did Slot bemoan the referee’s intransigence or call the law an ass? No, he didn’t – he called out his player for being stupid in the moment.

‌”Every fan feels the automatic yellow for removing your shirt is a bit harsh, but they also know that it is monumentally dim to do it, especially if you have already been booked.

‌”Arne will bemoan the loss at Crystal Palace, but his stock continues to rise – with me, anyway.”

Liverpool must think about the best way to get back on track this season

Before the 2025-26 season had even kicked off, most fans and pundits believed that Liverpool would retain their Premier League title.

In fact, some even said that they were favourites for the Premier League title and the Champions League.

Indeed, they did spend over £400million in the summer, so you’d expect them to at least win one of these, but after their last two performances against Palace and Galatasaray, it’s hard to see how they’ll even come out on top in one.

Several players from Liverpool’s first-team squad need to seriously up their game, otherwise things could turn sour at Anfield in an instant.

At the moment, there’s no need to panic, but if Liverpool continue playing like that for their next few games, some serious questions will need to be asked.
