Trent Alexander-Arnold may have been handed yet another blow after his exit from Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool exit hasn’t quite worked out as he’d have wanted it to.

The right-back chose to leave Anfield upon the expiry of his contract with Los Blancos paying around £10million to sign him before his contract was up so that he could play in the Club World Cup.

Indeed, Arne Slot would have likely wanted to keep the Englishman around for a little longer, but in the end, that wasn’t how things worked out.

And, even though Xabi Alonso started Alexander-Arnold during the Club World Cup, since Dani Carvajal has returned from injury, his game time has been minimal.

In fact, reports have even emerged about Alexander-Arnold being Madrid’s second-choice for a ‘long time.’

Things just seem to be going from bad to worse for the 26-year-old, with Thomas Tuchel looking likely to have thrown yet another spanner in the works regarding the right-back’s future.

Reece James is likely to be Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice right back over Trent Alexander-Arnold

Although Tuchel has tried several different players in the Three Lions’ squad during their World Cup qualifiers, one player has more or less stayed cemented in his position, with that player being Reece James.

The defender has finally returned from injury, and now that he’s back, it’s clear that Tuchel favours the Chelsea captain over Alexander-Arnold.

Indeed, England do lose a large chunk of their creativity without Alexander-Arnold on the pitch, but the strength in defence that James brings to the side just about edges him into Tuchel’s first-team.

The fact that the German is also using inverted wingers means that they’re getting much more involved in the creative side of things, with players such as Noni Madueke thriving in the system.

And, after their wins against Andorra and Serbia over the last week or so, talkSPORT commentator Adrian Durham believes this could be the beginning of the end of Alexander-Arnold’s England career.

“This could be the end of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s international career,” he said.

“When you think about it, when James stays fit, does Trent get back in? Probably not.

“As good as he is, he’s got to have a real good run at Real Madrid and produce at Real Madrid to even get back in the England squad.”

Liverpool got the better half of the deal regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s sale

Although Liverpool fans were understandably hurt by one of their own wanting to exit Anfield, at the moment, it feels like the Reds got the better end of the stick.

Due to Alexander-Arnold’s exit, Liverpool welcomed Jeremie Frimpong to their ranks in the summer, with Conor Bradley also likely to be given a more prominent role this term.

Both players are much younger than the former Liverpool man and will likely be much cheaper on the Reds’ weekly wage bill.

And, although fans haven’t seen Frimpong fully unleashed yet due to his injury, it’s clear that he’s an impressive talent.

By the end of the 2025-26 season, it’ll be interesting to see if Alexander-Arnold has actually ended up better off or if he should have just stayed at Liverpool and trusted the process.

At the moment, however, it certainly feels like the Englishman made the wrong choice for himself.
