£60m Liverpool player left absolutely ‘distraught’ after what happened on international duty

Liverpool have had most of their first-team squad on international duty over the last week or so.

The Reds have had the perfect start to the 2025-26 Premier League season as they’ve earned all nine points from their first three games.

Indeed, several members of Liverpool’s first-team squad have been in fine form already, but for some of the new arrivals, the international break has likely stopped them from developing some much-needed chemistry with their teammates.

One of Arne Slot’s main goals this season will be to retain the Premier League title, and if Liverpool don’t manage to do that, especially now that Alexander Isak has joined, it’ll be a massive failure.

And, although things may be going well domestically for Liverpool, some players haven’t had the best of times while on international duty this week.

Dominik Szoboszlai seen looking ‘absolutely distraught’ after Hungary’s 3-2 defeat to Portugal

One of the most entertaining games of the international break was Tuesday’s clash between Portugal and Hungary.

The two teams are both fighting for World Cup qualification, with Tuesday’s clash likely to be a turning point in the hopes of qualification for both countries.

However, seeing as though Portugal scored the winner in the 86th minute, just two minutes after Hungary bagged their equaliser, Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai wasn’t left best pleased.

That is according to a report from The Athletic journalist, Gregg Evans, who shared that the midfielder looked “absolutely distraught” at full-time.

“Szoboszlai looks absolutely distraught after Hungary’s defeat to Portugal,” he wrote.

“It was such a spirited performance but to throw it away late on and lose 3-2 is clearly a tough one to take.”

Dominik Szoboszlai has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season

Although Szoboszlai has been playing at right-back for most of Liverpool’s 2025-26 campaign thus far, he’s still emerged as one of Slot’s best players.

The midfielder’s vision for a pass and his defensive contributions are two of the main reasons why the former RB Leipzig man has thrived in his new role.

Szoboszlai has also managed to bag the winner against Arsenal after he struck a 32-yard free-kick straight into the top left corner.

Indeed, now that Jeremie Frimpong is likely to be back in Slot’s starting XI upon his return from injury, it’s unclear how Szoboszlai is going to fit into the Dutchman’s plans.

That is, especially since he already has the likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Florian Wirtz among his ranks.

One thing is for sure, however, with the form that the Hungary international is in at the moment, he can’t be left on the bench, even if Mac Allister and Wirtz are fit and ready to play.
