Michael Owen says every footballer will now start doing the same thing after what happened at Liverpool on deadline day

Michael Owen has often been very vocal about his opinions on Liverpool.

The striker played out his prime years with the club, and although he tarnished his relationship with the fans after he chose to join Manchester United at the latter end of his career, he still had a massive impact on the Anfield outfit.

And, since he’s been retired, he’s often popped up during the Reds’ games as a pundit and has chipped in with his analysis here and there.

As with most big football stories, however, every pundit wants in on it, and after the transfer of Marc Guehi to the Reds fell through, the former Liverpool man shared his thoughts on how things panned out.

Michael Owen believes every footballer will now do the opposite of what Marc Guehi did this summer

One of the main stories to dominate the transfer window this summer was that Liverpool were willing to break the British transfer record to sign Alexander Isak.

Rumours of the Sweden international making the move to Merseyside have been rife since June, and although it took until deadline day to get it over the line, it’s finally been completed.

However, throughout the summer, Isak kicked up a massive fuss and flat-out refused to play for Newcastle, whereas Guehi chose to remain professional and show up for his team.

And, while the fans may have appreciated that, it’s clear that it isn’t the right way to go about things because, despite Liverpool being his dream move, he still wasn’t allowed to exit.

Taking to X, Owen gave his thoughts on what this could mean for future transfer windows.

“Hmmm. Behave badly and get the move you want,” he wrote.

“Behave like a gentleman and miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime.”

“No prizes for guessing how players will act in the future if this is the result.”

Liverpool should have tried to force Crystal Palace’s hand sooner

Throughout most of the summer transfer window, Steve Parish was adamant that Crystal Palace couldn’t let their captain go for free at the end of the season.

And, while there is still time in the January transfer window for a deal to be struck, Liverpool would likely want to pay less than half of the £35million they were willing to offer this summer.

However, with it being clear that Guehi wasn’t going to sign an extension, you’d have at least expected Palace to have one or two replacements lined up just in case Liverpool came through with a bid.

Indeed, they did try and sign Igor Julio on deadline day, but after the Brazilian chose to make the move to West Ham instead, the deal for Guehi was as good as dead.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen over the next six months, but on the face of things, it certainly feels like Arne Slot and Richard Hughes should have pushed that little bit harder earlier in the summer.

Because who knows, if they did manage to entice Parish with an offer, the Englishman could be a Liverpool player right now.
