Liverpool managed to carry on their perfect start to their Premier League campaign after they beat Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds were on the back foot for the entirety of the first half, but once Arne Slot chose to tweak a couple of things about his tactic, Liverpool were the ones on top.
However, if it wasn’t for Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning 32-yard free-kick, it would’ve felt harsh for Slot’s men to have only walked away with one point.
Indeed, there were times when it felt like Mikel Arteta’s men were going to sneak one past Liverpool, but since Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli kept on running the ball down the byline, no real chances ever emerged.

And, even though Liverpool may have missed out on Marc Guehi this summer after Crystal Palace pulled out of the deal, that doesn’t mean that Slot hasn’t got a trick or two up his sleeves.
Curtis Jones could end up being Liverpool’s secret weapon this season
The 2025-26 summer transfer window has been rather mental for Liverpool.
Players such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak have been welcomed through the Anfield doors, with the Reds even spending over £400million on improving their ranks.
On Sunday, however, it was Curtis Jones’ 29-minute cameo that caught the eye.
Although Jones has been left out of Slot’s starting XI for players such as Alexis Mac Allister and Wirtz this season, when he was brought on against the Gunners, he once again proved why Liverpool are keeping him around.
As per Sofascore, the midfielder had 25 touches of the ball, maintained a pass accuracy of 95 per cent and also made one key pass despite only coming on in the 69th minute.
He also managed to accurately place 100 per cent of his long balls, and he even won 100 per cent of his aerial duels.
Indeed, Jones may not be the most prolific of players within Slot’s first-team squad, but the fact that he puts in as much effort as possible, no matter how little or how long he plays, is a testament to the player he is.
Curtis Jones needs a more regular role at Liverpool this season
Now that Harvey Elliott is out of the equation, it’s clear that Jones deserves a more regular role.
Indeed, he’s likely to start the odd game here and there, but since the Reds have talent such as Wirtz and Szoboszlai among their ranks, it feels like there’s plenty of room for Jones to be brought in as a central midfielder.
Liverpool’s main goals this season will be to retain the Premier League title and perhaps even win the Champions League, which means that if they want to be at their best, all their players need regular rest.

And, with the vast majority of the Reds’ squad having a point to prove about their futures at Anfield, Slot needs to broaden his horizons and perhaps give those on the outside of his regular starting XI more of a look in.
That is, especially since the Dutchman dubbed Jones a “complete” player after he was called up to the England squad by Lee Carsley back in 2024.
