Liverpool are close to losing Harvey Elliott on transfer deadline day as talks advance over an exit.

The Reds are in the midst of a busy final day of the transfer window, with the focus largely on incomings.

But while Alexander Isak is due to arrive for a British record transfer fee, and Marc Guehi could yet follow him, there is likely to be some movement in the departures lounge as well.

As Rousing The Kop revealed earlier on Monday, Elliott is keen on a move to Aston Villa, with Unai Emery’s side pushing for an agreement.

And with the hours ticking down on the window, journalist David Ornstein has broken news of an agreement being very close.

Harvey Elliott close to Liverpool exit

Elliott has become a peripheral figure under Arne Slot. Nevertheless, he is a boyhood Liverpool fan who always gives his all on the pitch. Supporters will be disappointed to see him go.

But according to Ornstein, that is exactly what looks like it may now happen.

Taking to X this afternoon, the journalist reported that a loan with an obligation to buy is advancing quickly between Villa and Liverpool.

“Aston Villa closing in on DeadlineDay deal to sign Harvey Elliott from Liverpool before transfer window closes,” says the reporter.

Liverpool could be making a mistake with Elliott

The topic of Elliott’s immediate future has been the cause of much debate among Liverpool fans ever since the start of last season.

But the truth of the matter is that Slot simply does not seem to fancy the No. 19. For whatever reason, the Liverpool head coach does not trust him.

As a result, it is very hard to make too much of a case for Elliott to stay at Anfield this summer.

Nevertheless, that does not mean that the Reds are not making a mistake here. Elliott is a fine player and could yet make them regret this decision.

£35m does not seem like a huge fee for a player of Elliott’s quality, and you do wonder whether Liverpool would simply be better off keeping him around. Unfortunately, that now does not look likely to happen.
