Liverpool’s move for ‘exceptional’ player could be set to take a decisive turn on Thursday

Liverpool have been one of the busiest teams in the transfer market this summer, and with there now being just under two weeks left in the window, it’s unclear whether any more moves will be made.

The Reds have welcomed a plethora of new players to their ranks and, while on paper their team looks far stronger than it did last term, they still need some time to gel.

Indeed, Arne Slot led his first-team squad to a 4-2 victory against Bournemouth in their opening Premier League game of the season, and while the result was good, their performance was far from ideal.

So, with this in mind, it isn’t a surprise to see a fair few names still being linked with an Anfield switch this summer.

Liverpool could “step up” their interest in Marc Guehi if Crystal Palace perform well on Thursday

One of the main things that has been holding Liverpool back from making a formal move for Marc Guehi is the price tag that Crystal Palace have slapped on his head.

The defender has entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, and even though the Eagles don’t want to lose the Englishman for free, it’s something that is becoming more likely as the days go on.

And now, while live on Sky Sports News, journalist Kaveh Solhekol has shared his thoughts on the Reds’ pursuit of the centre-back.

“It is possible [Marc Guehi leaves Crystal Palace in this window], it depends on what happens in the game tonight. If they win the game easily so that they’re almost through the playoff, it doesn’t matter about the return leg next week,” he said.

“I can see a situation where maybe Liverpool step up their interest in Guehi and make an increased bid for him in the next couple of days.

“And then Palace would have a decision to make. But having heard from [chairman] Steve Parish, he said we cannot have a situation where a player as good as Guehi leaves on a free transfer next summer.

“So they would possibly be open to selling both those players [Eberechi Eze as well]. But it’s not all doom and gloom for Palace because Eberechi Eze will be replaced. And if Guehi was to leave, he would be replaced as well.”

Liverpool could do with bringing Marc Guehi in this summer

Although Richard Hughes has just confirmed the signing of 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni, there’s still room within Slot’s ranks for Guehi this summer.

At the moment, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are the Dutchman’s first-choice centre-backs; however, after the performance that Konate put in against Bournemouth, it’s clear that some competition is needed.

Of course, Joe Gomez is still among Liverpool’s ranks and is likely seen as their third-choice, but due to his unreliability, Konate may feel untouchable.

To make matters worse, the Frenchman only has a year left on his current deal at Anfield and without a resolution in sight for that either, things are all a bit up in the air at the moment.

For now, it seems like Slot is happy with the squad he has, but if the opportunity to prise Guehi away from Selhurst Park arises, it’s something that should be deeply considered by all those involved with Liverpool.

That is, especially since Gareth Southgate dubbed the centre-back “exceptional” after his performances for England at Euro 2024.
