Liverpool released their new squad numbers for the season ahead on Friday with some very interesting decisions made.
The headline news for Reds supporters is that Florian Wirtz has acquired the No. 7 shirt only vacated by Luis Diaz on Wednesday.
Elsewhere, Hugo Ekitike opted for No. 22, while Milos Kerkez will wear No. 6. There were no surprises with Jeremie Frimpong, who takes No. 30, with Giorgi Mamardashvili choosing No. 25.
Meanwhile, there were also some noteworthy changes within the existing Liverpool squad.
Conor Bradley’s new importance has been recognised as he switches from No. 84 to No. 12, a shirt more befitting of his newfound status at Liverpool.
But Bradley was not the only young player moving up in the world, with a clear hint dropped that Trey Nyoni is in line for a bigger role this season.

Trey Nyoni takes No. 42
While it easy to see squad number changes as something unimportant in the grand scheme of things, the truth is that they can give clear clues about a player’s status at a club.
Nyoni was not even given a number upon his arrival from Leicester in 2023. Aged just 16 at the time, the midfielder was not seen as a part of the first team.
Once Jurgen Klopp recognised his talent and promoted him through the ranks, Nyoni was handed the No. 98 shirt, an academy selection if ever there was one.
However, the 18-year-old has once again showed his promise this summer, being one of only a handful of young players to be taken on tour with the Liverpool first team.

Nyoni has impressed in pre-season, capping things off with a well-taken goal against Yokohama F. Marinos on Wednesday.
And as Liverpool announced their new numbers on Friday, it was clear that Nyoni’s progress has been recognised. The former Leicester prospect has been changed from No. 98, to No. 42.
Nyoni ready for bigger role
Although 42 is very much a younger player’s number in the grand scheme of things, it is still an important shift for Nyoni.
The teenager has presumably picked his own number, which bodes well for his chances of involvement once the season gets underway.
Liverpool arguably do not have a natural alternative to Ryan Gravenberch within the squad, and perhaps this is a role that is now being earmarked for Nyoni.
Having been around the senior side for the best part of 18 months now, he is clearly comfortable at that level and looks ready to step up to more regular involvement.
Nyoni was described as ‘special’ by Liverpool supporters during pre-season last summer. 12 months on, and he is continuing down that path.
