Liverpool’s new Adidas kit reveal leaves fans disappointed at glaring omission

Liverpool have released their brand new Adidas home and away kits to much fanfare this Friday.

The Reds have spent the past five years wearing Nike, having last been sponsored by Adidas in 2012.

A favourite amongst supporters, the German sportswear brand have signed a mega 10-year contract with Liverpool, kitting them out until at least the 2034/35 campaign.

Prior to the kit being revealed, Liverpool announced a raft of squad number changes including new signing Florian Wirtz being handed the No. 7 shirt.

What followed was a glitzy promotional advert which featured a number of Liverpool legends and current members of the Reds’ men’s and women’s squads.

However, while supporters were delighted to see the likes of Robbie Fowler, Jamie Carragher and John Barnes feature, there was one very notable omission.

Steven Gerrard missing from Liverpool kit launch

When Liverpool returned to Adidas in 2006, Steven Gerrard was the face of much of the advertising. An athlete of the company, the then Reds’ captain was a natural fit.

19 years on, fans had expected to see Gerrard front and centre of the adverts once again. However, disappointingly, there was no sign of the legendary Scouser.

“Mateeee why isn’t Gerrard in the kit announcement,” one fan queried. “Legit I was hoping to see Gerrard in the kit announcement as well,” added another.

“They missed a trick by not including Gerrard in this,” another supporter claimed, while more wondered “How didn’t Adidas have Gerrard & Torres.”

“Wish they’d got Gerrard and Torres in, would’ve been unreal,” one more fan admitted.

Others pointed out that there was a little nod to Gerrard, however, with the No. 8 featuring in one of the clips in the video, kissing the camera after scoring at Old Trafford in 2009.

Adidas also harked back to a clip of Gerrard and Xabi Alonso firing footballs at clay pigeons during the 2000s, this time using Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

“Adidas recreated the Gerrard and Alonso clip with Macca and Gravenberch,” someone said, while others tried to explain the former captain’s absence.

“This was done ages ago. Gerrard was still contracted to another club,” one fan explained, with some more making predictions that the former captain will promote the third kit, revealed later this summer.

“He’s waiting for the 3rd kit with Dom and Isak,” one supporter claimed.

Liverpool offer 10% off on new kit orders

Although it was disappointing not to see Gerrard involved in the kit launch, there was still a lot to like about Liverpool’s new strips.

And the Reds are giving supporters the chance to save money on both kits, if ordered together.

As detailed on Liverpoolfc.com, fans who buy both a home and away shirt in the same size through the LFC online store will receive a 10% discount on the total price.

With shirts retailing at a base price of £85 for short sleeve or £90 for long sleeve, fans may need all the help they can get.
