Liverpool not giving up on Alexander Isak as Newcastle soon set to face ‘significant jeopardy’

It’s a well-known fact that Liverpool have been vying for the transfer of Alexander Isak since the summer transfer window first opened.

The towering Swede has been the Reds’ dream target for a while now, and although talks may have halted, that doesn’t mean they can’t be reignited at a later date.

Isak is one of the Premier League’s best strikers, with the fact that he scored over 25 goals across all competitions only backing that up further.

And, although Liverpool are now getting into the advanced stages of their deal for Hugo Ekitike, a fresh update has been shared on Liverpool getting their dream number nine.

Seeing as though Isak has three years left on his current deal with Newcastle, the Magpies find themselves in a rather strong negotiating position.

This is likely one of the main reasons that they can stand so strongly on their not-for-sale stance.

However, as per a report from BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel, Eddie Howe’s men will face ‘significantly more jeopardy’ next season.

Mokbel outlines that if the Reds do end up bringing Ekitike in this summer, they may decide that they ‘do not require’ a new number nine, especially if one or two of their attackers also stay-put.

However, if Arne Slot does decide that he wants another striker, Mokbel doesn’t think the towering Swede will be ‘too far away’ from their thoughts.

Although Slot’s preferred system is a 4-3-3, if Isak does come available for a decent fee next summer, it’d be silly for him not to at least try and explore a deal.

Mohamed Salah will be entering the final year of his deal, and if players such as Luis Diaz or Darwin Nunez end up staying at Anfield, a change in system could be on the cards, depending on how well they do, of course.

At the moment, Ekitike still feels pretty raw, and although it’s clear that he has plenty of talent, the 2024-25 campaign was the only one where he’s managed to bag over 15 goals.

Indeed, only time will tell whether the Reds’ pivot to Ekitike was worth it, but if he manages to fulfil his potential, it could end up being one of the smartest moves that Slot and Richard Hughes make this summer.
