One of Liverpool’s main goals this summer was to bolster their attacking ranks.

Indeed, Mohamed Salah was in fine form during the 2024-25 season with the Egyptian King racking up more than 50 goal contributions across all competitions.

However, the Reds can’t solely rely on one player to get them through the season, which is why players such as Florian Wirtz have been brought into Anfield.

And now, it finally seems like Liverpool could be getting themselves a regular-scoring number nine, which is what they’ve needed for the longest time.

Liverpool are now ‘advancing’ in talks to sign Hugo Ekitike this summer

Throughout the summer transfer window, there have been two players who have been linked with an Anfield switch: Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.

And, while the latter of the two is Arne Slot’s dream target, it seems like Ekitike is the one Liverpool are pursuing.

That is, according to a report from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who has shared an update on the Reds’ stance via his personal X account.

“Understand Liverpool are advancing today in club to club talks with Eintracht for Hugo Ekitike,” he wrote.

“While Isak deal depends on final decision by Newcastle as they insist on not-for-sale stance.

“Liverpool also progressing on both club and player side for Ekitike.”

Hugo Ekitike could be an interesting signing for Liverpool

Every Liverpool fan knows that, on paper, Isak is the far better player for their team to go after.

The towering Swede already has plenty of Premier League experience as the former Real Sociedad man managed to score over 20 goals across all competitions last season.

However, since Ekitike is only 23 years old, there’s still plenty of time for him to grow and become an even better player than Isak in the future.

With this in mind, it’s clear to see why Eintracht Frankfurt are demanding a fee worth around £85million for the Frenchman, even though the 2024-25 campaign was the first where he managed to score over 10 goals.

Indeed, this would be a massive risk on Slot’s behalf, especially since the Reds desperately need a proven goal scorer.

But if a deal for Isak isn’t possible, then Ekitike looks to be the next best thing for the Merseyside outfit.
