Liverpool got their pre-season underway and certain players will be very happy with how they performed.

After what felt like a long break away, Reds fans will be ecstatic to be able to see their team play again, with Liverpool beating Preston 3-1.

Arne Slot was able to use this match to experiment with both new and current players, trying them out in different positions to those they are perhaps used to.

Federico Chiesa was one who played ‘out of position’ but he actually looked rather comfortable, suggesting that he may get a chance there more often.

The Italian has been linked with a move away, but supporters might now be very keen for the 27-year-old to stick around a little while longer.

Federico Chiesa shines in the number nine role

Usually a right winger, Chiesa has received barely any minutes since joining the Reds last summer, mainly due to the fact that they have Mohamed Salah in that position.

Slot used the game against Preston to try something a little different and decided to play him in a centre-forward role, a position in which he seemed to thrive.

He played a key role for the first goal after excellent dribbling skills, with fans recognising his contribution, and rightly so.

One fan put: “Chiesa is the most selfless player I’ve ever watched.” Another simply wrote: “Chiesa’s been on fire, you love to see it.”

A third fan put: “We cannot get rid of Chiesa.” While a fourth put: “Look at Chiesa’s movement there with the ball for the pre assist. Tell me he doesn’t deserve a chance next season.”

Another added: “Really nice from Chiesa to make the goal and I don’t think we’ll want to lose him this summer. Even last season in his limited outings it was very clear he’s a player who gets the ball towards the goal regularly, just needs to be able to do more all over the pitch to get there.”

A sixth fan put: “If Chiesa is happy to have the sub role, why would we sell him?” A seventh issued a clear message, writing: “We cannot sell Chiesa by the way.”

A final fan put: “Also, we can’t sell Federico Chiesa. Give him one more season, we know there’s a player in there he just needs fitness and match sharpness. This squad needs his wholesome energy this season.”

Federico Chiesa has not done his chances any harm

Players need to make the most of pre-season to prove to the manager why they should be given a starting role in the team, and Chiesa needed to do this more than most.

A solid 45 minutes has certainly only improved his chances of more game time next season, with the Italian showing just how versatile he can be.

If the Reds sell Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz as expected, his potential for minutes will only increase further, suggesting it might be worth staying around at Anfield another season.

The fans clearly want him to stay and Slot might now too after his short cameo, but it really does depend on what the player himself wants.
