Liverpool should drop Marc Guehi interest and focus on £79m dream signing to replace Ibrahima Konate

Marc Guehi has been dominating the Liverpool headlines over the last couple of weeks, with the Englishman being targeted by Arne Slot this summer.

The Reds are currently in the market for a new centre-back after Jarell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen was confirmed.

At the moment, the Anfield outfit only have three senior centre-backs among their ranks, which, across an entire season, is nowhere near enough cover.

That is, especially with how injury-prone both Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate have been over the last couple of seasons.

However, although Guehi seems to be the most likely player to join, there is another defender who has emerged as a potential target.

Liverpool now interested in RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba

Castello Lukeba is a 22-year-old centre-back from RB Leipzig who has been putting in some exceptional performances over the last season or so.

The Frenchman was brought in by the German outfit to replace Josko Gvardiol after he chose to join Manchester City, and he has since become an integral part of Leipzig’s back four.

And now, thanks to his performances, Liverpool and some of their Premier League rivals are interested in acquiring his services.

That is, according to a report from Foot Mercato, who share that Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Tottenham are all ‘interested’ in the centre-back.

Lukeba is ‘open’ to leaving the Bundesliga outfit, but his release clause sits at €90million (£77.8million), which feels a tad steep.

Foot Mercato do, however, add that Leipzig have ‘agreed’ to sell him for a smaller fee with interest in the defender expected to heat up upon his return to training.

Why Castello Lukeba could be Liverpool’s dream signing

At the moment, Liverpool don’t have a left-footed centre-back among their ranks, with each of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez all being right-footed.

Of the three centre-backs among Slot’s ranks, Konate only has a year left on his deal with the Anfield outfit, and for now, there are no signs of an extension being agreed upon.

This has left the Reds in a bit of a pickle as they likely weren’t expecting to have to replace Konate any time soon.

And, although the Frenchman plays as a right-sided centre-back for Liverpool, if Lukeba was brought in, Van Dijk would be allowed to move to right centre-back and use his dominant foot more often.

Indeed, Guehi can also be used on either side, but with Lukeba being just 22 years old, there’s more room for him to grow.

Of course, he’s also cost almost double what the Englishman would, but at the moment, it feels like he could be the man for Slot.

That is, even if Guehi would only cost around £40million this summer.
