Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically died in a road traffic accident in Spain.
Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed on Thursday morning after an incident in the province of Zamora.
As confirmed by BBC News, the 28-year-old, who married girlfriend Rute Cardoso on June 22nd, was travelling in a Lamborghini with his brother.
The car reportedly caught a flat tyre while trying to overtake another vehicle, and subsequently caught fire. Both Jota and his brother were killed.
Spanish Guardia Civil confirm Diogo Jota death
After news of Jota’s passing broke on Thursday morning, the Spanish Guardia Civil released a statement confirming the death of Liverpool‘s No. 20.
“The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking,” the verbal statement confirms.
“It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.”
Portuguese FA pay tribute to Jota
After hearing the heart-breaking news of Jota’s passing, tributes have poured in for the Liverpool man.
“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, this morning in Spain,” said Portuguese FA president Pedro Proenca.
“Much more than a fantastic player, with almost 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.
“On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Jota, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players played, respectively.”
It has also been confirmed that a minute’s silence has been requested ahead of Thursday evening’s Portugal vs Spain match at the Women’s Euros.
