Darren Bent says £50m player should definitely sign for Liverpool this summer

Liverpool have dominated the headlines during the first few weeks of the summer transfer window.

The Anfield outfit may have only brought in three players thus far, but with the amount of talent that they’ve been linked with over the last few weeks, it’s unlikely that they’re going to stop there.

Milos Kerkez’s transfer from Bournemouth is also on the cusp of completion, which helps Arne Slot solve yet another one of his problem positions as he gears his team up to fight for the Premier League title once again.

Of course, other top-flight teams are also making moves and strengthening their ranks, but with the calibre of players the Reds have signed already, it’s hard to see how they won’t be the team to beat again next season.

Darren Bent believes Marc Guehi should make the move to Liverpool

Another player that Liverpool have been linked with is Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

The centre-back only has a year left on his deal at Selhurst Park with the Eagles looking to sell the Englishman before he can depart on a free transfer at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Guehi is widely regarded as England’s best centre-back at the moment, so it isn’t all that much of a surprise to see Liverpool linked with an interest.

And, while speaking live on talkSPORT, Darren Bent gave his thoughts on the potential of Guehi making the move to Merseyside.

“It’s a difficult one, but if Liverpool come calling, certainly with the way Liverpool are recruiting at the minute, that’s the place to go,” he said.

“I get it, he might have to go there and battle for his place, but I think Konate has got one year left, he’s got one year left, but I think it might be best for all parties, including the player.

“Liverpool sell Konate to Real Madrid, if they’re willing to pay, and then they buy Guehi.

“That’s the problem then, neither player goes for free, you get a fee for both players, and I think Guehi can go to Liverpool and start.

“Of course he’s going to have one eye on the World Cup next year, I think he’ll be in that, he’s far too good of a defender to not be in it.

“I wouldn’t like to see him go to Liverpool because that’s making them stronger, but it’s just weird that Liverpool have a centre-half who’s got a year left and he’s being courted by Real Madrid, and Guehi has a year left.”

Marc Guehi signing for Liverpool makes plenty of sense

With Jarell Quansah on his way to Bayer Leverkusen for around £30million, Slot is left with just three senior centre-backs among his ranks.

Indeed, Wataru Endo can fill in as a fourth-choice if needed, but when the injury history of Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez is taken into consideration, it feels like they need some reinforcements.

Palace are reportedly looking for between £35 and £40million to allow Guehi to leave this summer as they don’t want to lose him for nothing next term.

If the Reds put the money earned from the Quansah deal towards a move for the Englishman, they’d have a top-class centre-back on their books for a cut-rate fee.

Indeed, others would then have to be sold to offset the money spent on players such as Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, but in the grand scheme of things, signing Guehi for such a small fee feels like too good of a deal to turn down.

That is, even if Konate signs an extension to his Anfield stay this summer.
