Paul Joyce reveals the real reason why Florian Wirtz chose Liverpool over Manchester City

Florian Wirtz could end up being the signing of the summer, even though the transfer window has only just opened.

The German was one of the most sought-after players in the world when it was reported that he’d be available, but in the end, only Liverpool could persuade him to jump ship.

Wirtz has contributed to over 30 goals for Bayer Leverkusen this season, and although the £100million up-front may be a tad steep, for a player of his quality, it feels worthwhile.

The arrival of the attacking midfielder will shatter Liverpool’s club-record fee and would likely make him one of the most-watched players in the Premier League next season.

Florian Wirtz chose Liverpool over Manchester City due to the uncertainty around Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola is undoubtedly one of the best managers of his generation.

The Spaniard is a serial winner and has often got the best out of every team he’s been in charge of.

However, seeing as though his recent contract extension at the Etihad only takes him to 2027, it seems like Wirtz had second thoughts about the move.

That is, according to The Times journalist Paul Joyce, who claimed that Wirtz ‘enquired’ about how long Guardiola would remain in charge of the Cityzens.

Guardiola’s reaction was less than emphatic, which resulted in the German turning down City, and ‘not the other way around’, Joyce added.

Liverpool need a new striker to accompany Florian Wirtz

It’s clear that Liverpool are in for a summer of change with the likes of Jeremie Frimpong already being brought to Anfield.

Players such as Caoimhin Kelleher and Trent Alexander-Arnold have also left the club, which shows that Arne Slot is not messing around this summer.

One of the main positions they need to reinforce is their strikeforce, with numerous players such as Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike already being linked.

Indeed, nothing concrete, such as a bid or enquiry, has occurred yet, but with the steep asking price for both players, it’s hard to know whether one will be donning the Red of Liverpool by the start of next season.

Of course, these are all ifs, buts and maybes at the moment, but seeing as though Liverpool will have Mohamed Salah, Wirtz, Cody Gakpo and potentially Luis Diaz at their disposal next term, it would be silly for Slot to not try and bring in an out-and-out goalscorer.
