Liverpool are set to have a busy summer transfer window after their Premier League title-winning season.

Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have already extended their Anfield stays with the duo evidently being seen as a key part of Liverpool’s future.

However, with players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold already on their way out, some moves will have to be made to ensure that Arne Slot’s men stay competitive.

There are a few areas of Liverpool’s team that could do with upgrading but at the moment, there’s one position in particular which seems to be causing quite a stir.

Liverpool to make move for Xavi Simons as potential Luis Diaz replacement

As well as players being rumoured with a move to Liverpool, some have also been linked with leaving the club, such as Luis Diaz.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco actually even admitted that the La Liga side ‘liked’ Diaz in a recent interview.

This has caused numerous rumours to come to life, with Xavi Simons being the latest player linked with a Liverpool move.

That is, according to a report from Caught Offside, who state that Liverpool are already ‘preparing’ a move for the young Dutchman.

The report adds that the Merseyside outfit sees the attacker as a ‘potential replacement’ for Diaz with ‘internal discussions’ suggesting a formal bid is being considered.

Simons would be available for a fee worth around €70million (£58.8m) with other English clubs, alongside the Reds, also showing an interest.

Although Simons has the ability to play as an attacking midfielder as well as a striker, it seems that Liverpool would prefer to use him on the wing.

The former Barcelona man is still only 22 years old, which already plays in his favour when compared to Liverpool’s Diaz.

He also has plenty of pace within him and his ability to beat a man is on par with Diaz’s.

Goal contribution-wise, things are also fairly close, with both players proving to be vital members of their teams.

While Diaz may have more goal contributions than Simons, he has played an extra 16 games than the Dutchman.

With this taken into account as well as the fact that Diaz has played as a striker for most of the season, Simons looks to be the better option.

Especially when the fact that Bayern Munich sporting director Cristoph Freund called Simons an “exceptional player” is taken into account.

But whether Liverpool and Slot believe he’s worth the £58.8m price tag that is set, remains to be seen.
