The transfer window hasn’t officially opened yet, but that hasn’t stopped Liverpool from putting in some early work on making new signings.

Jeremie Frimpong was at Melwood on Monday to complete his medical ahead of a £30m move to the Premier League champions, whilst Liverpool are stepping up their pursuit to sign Milos Kerkez after a breakout season with AFC Bournemouth.

As well as overhauling the fullback options, Liverpool are keen on signing a new no. 10, a position that Arne Slot is eager to bring in a world-class addition for in an attempt to take the Reds to the next level for the new season.

And Liverpool now appear to have ramped up their interest in signing one player for the role after talks with club owners FSG.

According to Bild, Liverpool officials have flown to the United States to meet with FSG seeking approval to sign Bayer Leverkusen superstar Florian Wirtz, who the German club value at €150m (£126m) this summer.

As per the report, FSG will give Liverpool the money required to sign the Germany international, with Manchester City dropping out of the race to sign Wirtz whilst Bayern Munich are willing to wait another year for the 22-year-old attacking midfielder.

Wirtz has been strongly linked with Liverpool in recent weeks with the Leverkusen talisman emerging as a potential superstar signing for the Reds, though all indicators suggest that a club-record fee will be needed to bring the youngster to Anfield.

However, with club officials seeking approval from Liverpool’s FSG owners and the funds already being made available, the chances of Wirtz heading to Merseyside seem as high as they have ever been, with the Reds in pole position.

Before the start of the month, all signs seemed to suggest that a world-class striker would be Liverpool’s top priority in the market, with the Premier League champions linked with some exciting names to lead the line for next season.

Yet it’s now becoming apparent that Wirtz could be Liverpool’s marquee signing this summer, with the Reds stepping up their interest in signing the Leverkusen superstar in a deal that could eclipse what was paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2017.

Indeed, Wirtz is one of the best players in the world and would be a fantastic addition to any club on the planet, and Liverpool winning the race for the 22-year-old ahead of Bayern and City would be nothing short of massive.
