Liverpool’s summer transfer window could be one to remember as the Reds gear up to make a number of changes to the team.
After Arsenal drew against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, Liverpool need just one point to confirm their status as Premier League champions.
But despite such a successful season, Arne Slot will not stand still this summer. New players will be brought in, while others will see their time at Liverpool come to an end.
Given his status as a legend of the club and a very prominent television pundit, Jamie Carragher has not been shy at weighing in with who he thinks Slot should buy and sell this summer.
During Thursday’s edition of The Overlap, Carragher suggested Kostas Tsimikas should be sold to help make way for a new starting left-back.
But after Slot has made some surprising decisions with Tsimikas over recent weeks, it is far from certain that Carragher will get his wish.
Kostas Tsimikas could stay at Liverpool
It has been clear for some time now that Liverpool will be signing a new left-back this summer.
Milos Kerkez looks like the top target in that respect and it would now be verging on a surprise if the Hungarian is not brought in.
To many, not only Carragher, Tsimikas is the player who is most likely to make way. The Greek has been firmly second choice behind Andy Robertson and is also perhaps more sell-able than the Scotland captain.
However, after seeing Robertson’s form trail off again recently, Slot has reinstated Tsimikas as his starting left-back.
After playing 60 minutes against West Ham, the 28-year-old started and finished Sunday’s win at Leicester.
With Robertson making mistakes at Fulham and then West Ham when brought off the bench, Tsimikas fully deserves this promotion. And if he can keep steady between now and the end of the campaign, maybe his Liverpool career will be elongated yet.
Tsimikas can still be useful to Liverpool
Another point in favour of keeping Tsimikas is that he has a year longer on his contract than Robertson. With the older player’s deal up next summer, it is Liverpool’s last chance to make a little money on him.
Tsimikas, meanwhile, is contracted until 2027 and perhaps Liverpool would be wise to give him an extra year at the club before making a decision in 2026.
The No.21 has by no means been perfect since arriving for around £12m in 2020, but he has also been a steady performer who has happily accepted his role as back-up.
While Robertson would have to get used to playing second fiddle to a new signing, Tsimikas would not need to adapt to this at all.
The general feeling is still that Tsimikas not Robertson will be the one to make way for a new signing this summer. But after Slot has surprisingly decided upon a new first choice to end the season, maybe this will turn on its head once again to leave Carragher disappointed.
