David Ornstein makes exciting suggestion about Liverpool’s spending power ahead of summer window

Liverpool fans could be in for an exciting Easter Sunday as they close in on the Premier League title.

If the Reds beat Leicester and Arsenal fall to an unlikely defeat against Ipswich, Liverpool will be crowned as English champions for the 20th time.

More likely is that Liverpool need a win against Tottenham at Anfield next Sunday to confirm their status as the best team in the land.

Reds supporters won’t mind that, with title celebrations at their home stadium long, long overdue.

In the meantime, head coach Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes are busy putting together plans to improve the team in the upcoming transfer window.

And according to journalist David Ornstein, Liverpool look likely to have some significant funds available.

Liverpool’s summer finances in good shape

From the outside looking in, some may wonder how it’s possible for Liverpool to get even better than they have been this season.

However, for those watching week on week, there are clear improvements needed to this Liverpool squad.

There is plenty of business that needs to be done. And speaking on NBC Sports about the Reds’ plans this summer, Ornstein says they are looking in good shape financially to deliver what is expected.

“Liverpool’s ambition is expected to be underlined by their summer transfer plans,” Ornstein says. “They’ve saved money in the last couple of windows, so their finances are in good shape to add a striker, for example. And we do expect Darwin Nunez to leave.”

“To strengthen at left-back,” he continues. “Someone like a Milos Kerkez, for example, at Bournemouth, but that would require Andy Robertson or Kostas Tsimikas to depart.

“Maybe a centre-half, they like Dean Huijsen of Bournemouth, let’s see what happens with Ibrahima Konate’s contract because it’s entering its last 12 months. And there maybe more work to do in what’s expected to be a busy summer at Anfield.”

How much could Liverpool spend?

To overhaul this Liverpool team in the manner needed, it is going to take a princely sum.

Ornstein has put forward three virtually certain areas where Liverpool will bolster – centre-forward, left-back and centre-back – and adding together the values of players linked in those positions can give us a guide to how much exactly could be spent.

Alexander Isak is the top target as a new striker, with the Newcastle frontman having an extraordinary price-tag of £150m. Isak may not be get-able, but Liverpool are seemingly ready to go big on a forward.

Kerkez has been rated at around £45m, with Dean Huijsen’s value set at £50m given the presence of a release clause in his contract.

Signing those three players would therefore come in at £245m. A huge figure, but surely not out of Liverpool’s reach given the lack of spending recently and the fact that Nunez will leave and could be followed by the likes of Luis Diaz, Tsimikas, Konate and Joe Gomez. A big summer lies in store.
