With the end of the season fast approaching, it is almost time to assess how Liverpool’s legion of loan players have fared in 2024/25.
As always, it has been a productive season for some of those out away from Anfield, while others have struggled to get going.
One who had been expected to push on and perhaps even make a first-team case was left-back Luke Chambers. Chambers made his senior Liverpool debut in 2023/24, eventually playing four times under Jurgen Klopp.
The 20-year-old then spent the second-half of the season with Wigan Athletic, where he earned a strong reputation as one of the Latics most important players.
Chambers had offers from the Championship last summer but opted to join Wigan again in order to continue his development there. Unfortunately, things haven’t gone to plan this time with injury badly disrupting the full-back.
And with Chambers’ season now confirmed to be over, Wigan manager Ryan Lowe has issued a worrying update over what he’s seen from the Liverpool academy youngster.

Luke Chambers ‘not quite right’ in training
It has been a really difficult season for Chambers. Having started the season as a key man under then manager Shaun Maloney it looked like the England U19 international was set to pick up where he left off.
But after becoming a mainstay, Chambers picked up an injury in October which ruled him out of action until early March.
From there, the left-back was only able to make two further appearances before being forced to call time on his season. And according to Lowe, it hadn’t been looking good for Chambers for a little while.
“He was just not quite right. I know he came back from his injury and he played under Glenn [Whelan], and then for me at Charlton,” the Scouse coach told Wigan Today.

“But after that, he wasn’t really right…we could see he wasn’t really right in training. He came to see me and said he didn’t feel right, we then spoke to Liverpool, and he obviously wasn’t right.
“It is gutting for him, because he is a very talented footballer,” Lowe added. “I’ve spoken to him and told him his sole focus is getting fit and ready. I think he’s got a couple of years left at Liverpool, and I really hope he’ll be back playing football before too long.”
What next for Chambers?
It has indeed been a really disappointing season for Chambers. All in all he managed only 13 appearances for Wigan.
Turning 21 this summer, there is still time for him to head somewhere else next season and stay on track for long-term involvement in the Liverpool squad.
However, with Liverpool’s left-back situation up for grabs this summer, a strong season at Wigan could have given Chambers the opportunity to really throw his hat in the ring. That will now not be the case.
Of course, his first focus should now be on getting back fit and ready to go again for pre-season.
From there, Arne Slot will likely run the rule over him and see whether fitness will permit another loan move for Chambers.
