When Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool in 2024, some onlookers mused how the German’s impact would affect the club’s young prospects and their chances in the first-team.
Klopp was a sensational manager at Liverpool for many reasons, but his willingness to give youth a chance was one which really stood out.
The 2023/24 campaign had highlighted this perfectly, with Klopp putting faith in his youngsters during an injury crisis at Anfield.
After bringing home the Carabao Cup against Chelsea the future looked incredibly bright for those Liverpool academy graduates trusted by Jurgen.
One of those to look every bit a future Liverpool player was striker Jayden Danns. Having played a part in that Carabao Cup final win, Danns went on to score two goal in five appearances under Klopp.
Fast forward a year, though, and progress has halted for the 19-year-old. And after a new, worrying update this week, fresh doubt has been cast on Danns’ future at Anfield.

Jayden Danns season ended by injury
Although Klopp gave Danns his chance at Liverpool, Arne Slot has clearly been impressed by the young striker as well.
Slot has handed him four further appearances this term, including his first ever start for the Reds – away at PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
From there, Danns joined Sunderland on-loan at the end of the January transfer window and the Black Cats looked like a good fit for the teenager.
Unfortunately, though, Danns arrived at Sunderland injured. And as confirmed by manager Regis Le Bris on Friday, the Scouser will not be fit to play for the rest of the season.

“He won’t play with us this season. It is definitive now,” said Le Bris. After Danns missed out on a loan at the start of the season through injury, his rotten luck has been compounded.
What was supposed to be another season of progress and playing first-team football has turned into a stalling one for Danns. The pressure is now on him to get fit and take the next step in 2025/26.
Liverpool already looking for Danns replacement?
There is no question Danns has the talent to be a success at Liverpool. He has looked at home during all of his nine appearances for the first-team and has excelled at youth level.
Danns was deemed to be ‘outrageous‘ during his time in the Liverpool academy and he was all set to show that on a bigger stage while out on-loan.
However, since breaking into the team in the winter of 2024, he has now suffered three long-ish term injuries. Progress has been curtailed at a critical point in his development and in the ruthless world of football youth development, that could be enough to miss out on a Liverpool career.
Certainly, the Reds will not wait around for Danns to get himself back fit. As Rousing The Kop revealed on Friday, Liverpool are keen on a deal for Ryan One of Sheffield United.
A tall, rangy, 18-year-old striker, One’s arrival may signal bad news for Danns. He has to do whatever he can to put these injury problems behind him and make an impression in pre-season. If not, his talent could go to waste.
