How Arne Slot and Liverpool can make English football history against West Ham at Anfield on Sunday

Liverpool have the chance to take another step closer to Premier League glory on Sunday as they face West Ham United at Anfield.

The Reds faced a setback last week after falling to a surprise defeat to Fulham.

Having missed the chance to go 14 clear, Arsenal will likely have cut Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points by the time the Reds kick off.

Regardless of what the Gunners do, though, Liverpool know four more wins will see them over the line as champions this season.

With West Ham sitting in 16th place and struggling to get any real form going under Graham Potter, they are heavy favourites to take the three points at Anfield.

It should also work in Liverpool’s favour that they have already beaten the Hammers twice by an aggregate score of 10-1 this season. And, as it turns out, a similar result on Sunday will see the Reds make English football history.

Liverpool can make history with West Ham thrashing

Liverpool have had a super record against West Ham over the years. That has continued in 2024/25, with the Reds smashing the Irons 5-1 in the Carabao Cup and then 5-0 in the Premier League.

And as per liverpoolfc.com, five more goals for Liverpool on Sunday would break an all-time record.

They report that no top flight team in English football history has ever scored five or more goals against the same team three times in one season.

With West Ham having won just one of their last 12 matches played on a Sunday, Liverpool might fancy their chances of making this niche piece of history.

While supporters at Anfield would love to see a goal-fest, though, the truth is that any kind of win would do.

At this stage of the season a scrappy 1-0 win is just as good as if Liverpool score another five.

As well as this interesting little piece of history, there are further landmarks set to be reached for the Reds on Sunday.

Sunday’s match also represents Arne Slot’s 50th as Liverpool head coach. The 46-year-old has won 35 of his first 49 in charge. No other Reds manager has won more than 29 in their opening half-century.
