Unfortunately for the likes of Caoimhin Kelleher, Kostas Tsimikas, Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah, the strength of Arne Slot’s Liverpool starting XI means opportunities continue to relatively few and far between.
Kelleher has been labelled ‘the best number two in the world’ by many – including former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp – but such a tag is one the soon-to-be 27-year-old goalkeeper will want to move away from sooner rather than later.
Tsimikas continues to spend much of his time on the bench despite Andy Robertson’s sudden decline. Harvey Elliott is struggling to nail down a regular spot either in Arne Slot’s midfield or his frontline.
And Jarell Quansah’s hopes of a bigger role in the Reds XI going forward will not be helped by the news that Virgil van Dijk is joining Mo Salah in signing a new contracts with the Premier League champions-in-waiting.
Quansah has started only two league matches so far under Slot.
He featured once in the competition until the start of December, while his most recent appearances have come from the bench with the former Feyenoord boss looking to close out a narrow win.
Now, Van Dijk is staying for the foreseeable future. Liverpool are hoping to tie down Ibrahima Konate. What’s more, Liverpool have opened talks with Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen too, the £50 million Spain international.
Fabrizio Romano says Newcastle United keen on Liverpool’s Jarrel Quansah
So Quansah, despite having a contract until the summer of 2029, is perhaps one to watch ahead of the summer transfer window.
At least, that is how the oracle of transfer news Fabrizio Romano sees it.
“I’ll keep an eye on Jarell Quansah because he is very good and very talented,” Romano said on his newest edition of the Here We Go podcast. “But, I think, sometimes you want to play.
“So you have Virgil van Dijk and the [new] contract. Ibrahima Konate is still there. There is interest in Dean Huijsen. Liverpool have many players in that position.”
Romano claims to have been informed that there is interest in Quansah from at least one of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals. A host of Bundesliga outfits are also positioning themselves ahead of a potential summer battle.
Would anybody really be surprised if Borussia Dortmund – having enjoyed such success in the English market with Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham and now the electrifying Jamie Gittens – were at the front of the queue?
“Jarell Quansah is attracting interest from several clubs,” Romano adds. “Newcastle, from what I’m hearing, but also German clubs. That is the information I can tell you. [Alongside The Magpies] I’m told there is also interest from the Bundesliga.
“I think there will be movement for Quansah. I think he is one of the players that Liverpool will consider cashing in [on] if the player wants to go and try something new.”
Arne Slot suggests Quansah needs to improve in possession
Recent reports have claimed that Inter Milan are in the mix for England Under-21 international Quansah. Newcastle’s interest allegedly goes back to the summer of 2024, with the Tyneside outfit valuing the Warrington-born 22-year-old at around £50 million.
And while Arne Slot has praised Ibrahima Konate’s ‘improved’ qualities in possession, it appears that he still has reservations about Quansah’s ability to progress the ball in the way he would like.
“Jarell did quite OK in that position, to be fair, and he would have helped us with set-pieces,” Slot said when explaining why he left Quansah on the bench the 1-0 Merseyside derby victory over Everton.
“But I felt – we felt – that we had to play better with the ball.”
