Liverpool’s trophy hopes suffered a monumental blow as they were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.

Arne Slot’s side entered the Wembley final strong favourites, Liverpool, though would be undone by a resolute Magpies performance.

Dan Burn would head home the opener before Liverpool-linked Alexander Isak doubled Newcastle’s lead at the start of the second half.

Federico Chiesa would get one back for the Reds, but it would turn out to be too little too late as the Magpies secured a deserved win.

Several Liverpool players disappointed against Newcastle and Reds supporters have since given their theories behind the poor performance.

Liverpool fans say Arne Slot’s side look tired against Newcastle

The Reds were far from their best at Wembley, something which was shown by Liverpool’s poor defending for Newcastle’s opener.

Arne Slot was visibly frustrated with his side’s lacklustre display – a type of performance which fans believe is down to tiredness.

Reds supporters took to X (formerly Twitter), to highlight Liverpool’s lack of energy in the final.

One fan said: “This is awful stuff from Liverpool. Lifeless all over the park and no football being played in possession. Team look like they’re sleepwalking to the seasons end.”

A third fan stated: “This is definitely looking like a very TIRED Liverpool team”

“Fair play to Newcastle fully deserved. Liverpool looked very tired not surprising after playing psg on Tuesday,” another supporter added.

Andy Roberston highlighted Liverpool tiredness after PSG defeat

To say Liverpool looked off the pace against Newcastle would be a huge understatement.

The likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch seemed like they were running on empty up against Newcastle’s midfield, meanwhile, the Liverpool defence simply couldn’t deal with the sharp Magpies attack.

With Liverpool clearly feeling the effects on their recent busY schedule, Andy Robertson actually highlighted the tiredness issue in the wake of the Champions League defeat to PSG.

Speaking post-match, the Reds left-back told Amazon Prime:

“We always bounce back, there’s a lot of tired legs in there, we need to recover properly and get ready to go, but we will be.

“Cup finals, we enjoy them, they’re the biggest games, and once we get that one out of the way, we’ll have had an intense period of time.

“The internationals and a little bit of a break, and then we go full throttle for the Premier League.”

Like Robertson said, the international break will give the Liverpool squad the chance to recoup and recover – something that is definitely needed after their Wembley display.
