March 5th has become an iconic date in Liverpool history, and there’s one key reason why.
Beating your rivals is always sweet, but putting seven past them is the stuff of dreams for fans.
Well that was the case for Reds supporters back in March 2023, after Liverpool thrashed Man United 7-0 at Anfield.
In what is one of the most iconic results in Liverpool history, Jurgen Klopp’s side managed to put a sensational seven past Man United, with six of those coming in the second half.
Having entered the game three places ahead of Liverpool in the Premier League table, some United fans, Gary Neville in particular, actually visited Anfield quietly confident that day – that confidence however would soon be shot to pieces.

Gary Neville’s confidence came back to haunt him against Liverpool
7-0 thrashings aside, the 2022/23 campaign was a rather unforgettable campaign for Liverpool, as Klopp’s side slipped below their regularly high standards.
Having spent the majority of the season outside of the top four, Liverpool were actually being outperformed by their arch rivals, as United impressed under Erik ten Haag.

With this in mind, Red Devils legend Neville was left feeling confident ahead of United’s trip to Anfield, saying before the game:
“I’m not nervous. I’ve never been more relaxed coming here in the last nine years as a Manchester United fan. Honestly, do you know, this bunch are tough.”
Those claims would of course go on to age like milk, as Klopp’s side dominated United – sparking an iconic photo between Neville and Reds legend Jamie Carragher.
Jurgen Klopp thought 7-0 Man United win was ‘once in a lifetime’ result
Winning any game 7-0 is a huge result, but to do that to one of your biggest rivals is simply unprecedented.
That is something that was felt by then Liverpool boss, Klopp – who told reporters in December 2023, that the game was a ‘once in a lifetime’ result.
“The 7-0 we knew that day, it was a freak result that happens once in a lifetime,” he insisted. “If it helps anyone for the next game it is the team who lost 7-0 and not the team who won 7-0.
“If you take it all out of consideration and just play a football game against the historical rival of Liverpool at home at Anfield that itself must make it a special game and that’s what I want to see from us, a special game.”
Liverpool’s success against United has been mixed since that iconic night, however, winning one, drawing three and losing one.
