Jamie Carragher makes bold Liverpool prediction for next season and shares why he’s so ‘excited’ about Arne Slot

Liverpool are everybody’s favourites to win the 2024/25 Premier League title after moving 13 points clear on Wednesday night.

The Reds swaggered past Newcastle United to make it back-to-back 2-0 victories and open up a cavernous gap to second-placed Arsenal.

Things are not over just yet, though. With 10 Premier League games still to play, Liverpool cannot afford to get ahead of themselves.

Nevertheless, unless there is a catastrophic collapse at Anfield, Arne Slot will lead the Reds to the title at the fist time of asking.

It may seem ridiculous now, but heading into the campaign, not a single pundit had backed Liverpool to beat Man City, Arsenal or any other challenger to lift the Premier League trophy.

Few will make the same mistake ahead of 2025/26, you’d imagine. In fact, former Reds centre-back Jamie Carragher has gone early to make Liverpool favourites next time around.

Jamie Carragher predicts Liverpool back-to-back

Liverpool fans would be unwise to start celebrating anything just yet. Having won only one title in the past 34 years, they know better than most that it isn’t done until it’s done.

But there’s no question that the Premier League table is looking very good just now. And according to Carragher, Slot and Liverpool are only going to get better from hereon in.

“What I’m really excited for is that I think next season will be the first time I will ever predict Liverpool to win the league at the start of the season,” the pundit told the ‘It’s Called Soccer!’ podcast. “Because I think next season they’ll win the league again.”

“The reason I say that is Arne Slot will know that squad and team and players so much more than he did 12 months ago and he also knows the deficiencies within the squad.”

“He hasn’t brought a proper player yet,” Carragher continued. “So, I’m almost excited thinking this guy’s going to look at the team thinking ‘this is the team that won the league, only lost one game all season and I think I can improve them.’

“I still think Man City will come back next season, but there’s questions about Arsenal, questions about everybody, but I think Liverpool are in a really strong position to try and kick on over the next few years under Slot.”

Gary Neville weighs in

This is a very bold call from Carragher and Liverpool fans will be desperate simply to get this season boxed off before looking ahead to the next.

Nevertheless, there is logic to what the Liverpool legend is saying, so much so that Gary Neville weighed in to agree with his colleague, with a caveat owing to the uncertainty over Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

“I think there’s a massive big caveat on that,” said the former Man United captain. “If Van Dijk leaves and Salah leaves, I honestly do believe that you’re not talking like that at the start of next season.

“If they stay I actually agree with Carra that they could be in a great position to add two or three players to that squad. But if Van Dijk and Salah both leave – and even if just Van Dijk leaves – that would be a huge hole to fill.”

City will be back and Arsenal aren’t going anywhere, perhaps even Chelsea, Man United or another challenger will arise once again. But whatever happens between now and May, Liverpool look poised to go again and again under Slot.
