Liverpool took another step closer to Premier League greatness on Wednesday evening, after picking up three points against Newcastle.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s ‘amazing’ goal and Alexis Mac Allister’s tidy finish were enough for the win, as the Reds went 13 points clear at the top.
Arne Slot highlighted Newcastle’s ‘threat’ before the game but Liverpool never looked massively fazed by the challenge posed by the Magpies.
In what was almost a warm-up game ahead of the Carabao Cup final, Danny Murphy believes Liverpool’s win over Newcastle could have a big impact on their Wembley final in just over two weeks time.

Danny Murphy claims Liverpool have ‘control’ ahead of Carabao Cup final
Having seen his side fail to lay a glove on the Reds, Eddie Howe labelled Liverpool as ‘high-class’ post-match.
The Magpies’ failing attack was arguably down to the fact Newcastle were without Alexander Isak, with the Swede out with a groin injury.
Injuries aside, however, Liverpool were still dominant and Murphy now believes the Reds have the ‘control’ heading into the Carabao Cup final.
“I think it’s difficult when you play a team a few weeks before a cup final and take a beating. Newcastle were ok tonight, they had a couple of chances. But it always felt as if Liverpool had the extra gear.
“Players are experienced these days, but Newcastle have only had the one final, Liverpool have been playing finals season in season out. You just get the feeling that the result tonight gives them control for the final. Sorry Al,” Murphy told Match of the Day.
Liverpool will fancy their chances at Wembley
Liverpool’s trip to Wembley will be the first chance for Slot to get his hands on a trophy since arriving on Merseyside.
The Reds’ recent record at Wembley suggests the Dutchman should be positive heading into the clash, with Liverpool having won their last three domestic finals.
| Liverpool’s last three Wembley finals | Against | Result |
| 2024 Carabao Cup final | Chelsea | 1-0 win (after extra time) |
| 2022 FA Cup final | Chelsea | 0-0, won 6-5 on penalties |
| 2022 Carabao Cup final | Chelsea | 0-0, won 11-10 on penalties |
Newcastle themselves have had recent Wembley trips, they, however, have not enjoyed the same success – losing out in the 2023 Carabao Cup final against Manchester United.
With experience and recent bragging rights behind them, Slot’s side will surely fancy their chances on March 16th.
