Arsenal’s defeat against West Ham gave Liverpool the chance to tend their lead at the top of the Premier League.

Despite going ten years without a win at the Etihad, the Reds wouldn’t let that damming record dampen their spirits.

With Cody Gakpo not fit enough to start, Arne Slot tinkered with his lineup – as Gary Neville praised Liverpool’s formation versus Man City.

Liverpool’s positional set-up wasn’t the only new tactic on display at the Etihad though, with Reds fans singing the praises of Slot following their opening goal.

Liverpool fans praise set-piece goal vs Man City

Having seen Man City control the majority of the ball early on, Liverpool would come to life in the 14th minute with a smart set-piece goal.

Dominic Szoboszlai would expertly flick Alexis Mac Allister’s corner onto Mohamed Salah, who slotted home past Ederson.

Clearly over the moon with the smart nature of their opening goal, Liverpool fans have taken to social media to react to the ‘beautiful’ goal.

One fan said (via X formerly Twitter): “Now that’s a beautiful set-piece from Liverpool. No fouls. No absurd pushing and blocking the goalkeeper.”

A third fan added: “Literally off the training ground. Class set piece from Liverpool.”

“Never seen such a set-piece routine from Liverpool! Fabulous,” added another supporter.

Gary Neville is a big fan of Liverpool’s set-piece

Liverpool supporters aren’t the only ones singing the praises of Slot’s smart set pieces, with Gary Neville also a big fan of the goal.

While commentating on SkySports, the former Man United man said:

“It’s so well worked. One off the training ground. Szoboszlai just puts it back into an area. Salah then just puts his left foot through it. There’s a little bit of good fortune, with the deflection off Ake. Arne Slot and his coaching team will be happy with themselves for the work they’ve put in on the training ground.”

The Reds haven’t enjoyed the best set-piece record so far this season, having only scored three. If they can start to replicate their Man City set-pieces more often, however, that tally will for sure start to rise.
