Micah Richards and Ashley Williams hail Jarell Quansah for ‘vital’ moment during Liverpool 2-1 Wolves

Liverpool got away with one on Sunday as they marked a poor performance against Wolves with three precious points.

The Reds are heading into an intense 10-day period in which they face each of Aston Villa, Manchester City and Newcastle.

With a real potential of points being dropped along the way, it was vital that Liverpool made the most of a relegation-threatened side visiting Anfield.

In the end, the history books will show that Liverpool did that. However, on the pitch it was tight run thing.

Ultimately, Arne Slot was thankful to some of his fringe players for stepping in and getting the job done against Wolves.

One of those to come off the bench and make an impact was Jarell Quansah, who has been hailed by former Premier League defenders Micah Richards and Ashley Williams after an important display.

Jarell Quansah praised for ‘vital’ moment

Quansah has had a struggle of a second season in the first-team Liverpool squad this year.

After breaking out so impressively in 2023/24, the centre-back has been shunted down the pecking order by Slot.

Nevertheless, all he can do is make an impact when given the chance. And on Sunday, that’s exactly what Quansah did. Had he not cut out Tommy Doyle’s ball across the six-yard box in the dying minutes, Wolves would surely have equalised.

And looking back on that tackle for BBC Match of the Day 2, Richards and Williams praised the Liverpool academy graduate for switching on and providing a big moment.

“He finds himself in a difficult position because his full-back Robertson has played Munetsi onside,” says Williams.

“But that is the type of defending that you don’t see that much anymore, being out of position and really having to sprint and make a tackle, he goes with the opposite leg, that’s as a good as a goal for me.”

“When you’re going for the Premier League it’s all about moments,” Richards adds. “He’s had an impact. It was difficult, he started the season, he got subbed at halftime, Slot said he wasn’t aggressive enough but today he showed how vital he can be to this team.”

Quansah form returns at crucial time

It may be an old cliché, but it’s still true that when you’re going for big trophies you need your full squad to show up. It can never only be about the 11 players regularly out on the pitch.

At Liverpool this season, squad players such as Quansah could be forgiven for snorting at such sympathies.

With Slot very much decided upon a large number of starters, he has not used the depth of his squad quite as much as the likes of Klopp ever did.

Still, Liverpool have a lot of games to play in a short period of time. Ibrahima Konate cannot start them all. Quansah will be needed.

On the form he’s shown for much of the season, you would not trust the 22-year-old to come in against Villa, City or Newcastle. However, Slot claimed Quansah is back to his best in training after Sunday’s match and on the evidence of the game itself, the young defender deserves another run out.
