Liverpool slammed for ‘unprofessional’ behaviour against Wolves as Frank Leboeuf goes in hard

Liverpool moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League with a narrow win over Wolves on Sunday.

The Reds were under a little pressure heading into the game, having seen their lead reduced to four on Saturday.

However, with Wolves struggling towards the bottom of the Premier League table, Liverpool had been expected to see them off with ease at Anfield.

After the Reds raced into a 2-0 lead, that looked like being exactly what would happen.

But Wolves roared back. A lovely finish from Matheus Cunha halved the deficit and no one could have complained had Vitor Pereira’s team found an equaliser.

In the end Liverpool held on and three points are all that matters now. But according to World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf, Arne Slot’s team deserve real criticism for how they went about Sunday’s match.

Frank Leboeuf slams Liverpool performance

On paper, this should have been straightforward for Liverpool. However, there are mitigating factors which meant it was never going to be.

The football calendar can be the biggest leveller for weaker sides heading to big teams later on during seasons.

While the Liverpool fixture list is so packed at the moment, Wolves have had a slightly more serene journey. The Reds played out an energy-sapping Merseyside Derby on Wednesday, for example, as Wolves enjoyed a full week off.

Speaking on ESPN FC, though, Leboeuf did not take any of that into account. Instead, he accused Liverpool of an ‘unprofessional’ and ‘awful’ performance which should have been punished.

“Really lucky day for the Reds because they didn’t deserve to win,” said the former Chelsea man.

“What I saw today, the second-half, from what I guess is the next champion of the Premier League, was quite unprofessional and we’re talking about people with very much experience, very much maturity.”

“It was amazing to see how they collapsed in that game, showing no strength, no unity,” Leboeuf added. “They were nowhere near it at all. I’ve never seen that in my life from a future champion. That was awful.”

Pundits disagree over Ibrahima Konate red card

One of the biggest talking points of Sunday’s game was a potential red card for Ibrahima Konate.

Jamie Carragher berated Konate for giving the referee a decision to make with a clumsy challenge while already on a yellow card. The Frenchman was then hooked at halftime. But according to Leboeuf, Konate should have been off.

“I think there was a red card deserved from Konate,” he said. “He means to smash the guy, it should have been a second yellow card for me.”

However, speaking on BBC Match of the Day 2, both Micah Richards and Ashley Williams disagreed, suggesting there was not enough in Konate’s second challenge on Cunha.

“Maybe [he was lucky], but I don’t think this is a yellow card,” said Williams. “In slow motion it looks worse,” says Richards. “I don’t think you can send people off for that.”
