No Liverpool player has hit a hat-trick in the Premier League for more than three years.
The Reds have had some terrific times over that period – and a number of players have scored a good amount of goals – but there have been no trebles.
For Manchester City, the tale is a little different. Since a Liverpool player last took the match ball home, City stars have done so 12 times.
Given that slightly remarkable statistic, it should perhaps not have been a surprise to see new signing Omar Marmoush bag thee goals in the Premier League on Saturday.
Marmoush was heavily linked with Liverpool before joining City, and his hat-trick against Newcastle may have had some Reds supporters wishing he’d been signed.
For Mohamed Salah, the goals will have taken on a different meaning. Having seen his Egypt teammate find the net three times in just his fifth game for City, he’ll be wary of Marmoush catching his own Premier League hat-trick haul.

Mohamed Salah has four Premier League hat-tricks
After his move to City, Marmoush and Salah will always be linked, the 26-year-old will simply have to accept that.
However, rather than weighing him down, comparisons with Liverpool’s Egyptian King do not seem to faze Marmoush.
That feeling may be helped by the narrative being pushed by certain social media accounts.
After Marmoush’s hat-trick on Saturday, the fact that Salah was yet to score one himself in the Premier League this season was a talking point for TNT Sports, for example.

In a now deleted post, the broadcaster pointed out that the City man had scored three in one game before his Liverpool counterpart this term. After backlash from supporters, the post has disappeared.
Of course, the point they made is a fact. But it’s also true that Marmoush must still score three more hat-tricks in the division to match his countryman’s tally.
Salah’s four hat-tricks for Liverpool
Salah did not quite grab a hat-trick as early into his Premier League career as Marmoush, but he still got one in his first season at Liverpool.
That came back in March 2018, when the No.11 ploughed in four goals against Watford at Anfield.
| Date | Opposition | Venue | Goals Scored (Penalties) |
| 17/03/2018 | Watford | Anfield | 4 |
| 08/12/2018 | Bournemouth | Vitality Stadium | 3 |
| 12/09/2020 | Leeds | Anfield | 3(2) |
| 24/10/2021 | Man United | Old Trafford | 3 |
Salah didn’t have to wait too long for his next treble, which came away at Bournemouth in December 2018.
Almost two years passed before Mo bagged three – including two penalties – on the first day of the 2020/21 season against Leeds, before the Egyptian King hit his most famous of all; three goals at Old Trafford in October 2021. That remains Liverpool’s last league hat-trick.
After watching Marmoush do it on Saturday, Wolves had better watch out on Sunday. Mo will be keen to make it five.
