Peter Crouch explains what he loved about Curtis Jones’ red card during Everton 2-2 Liverpool

Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Everton on Wednesday will go down in Merseyside Derby folklore.

Although the Blues will undoubtedly have the happier memories of the occasion, it was not necessarily a terrible evening for the Reds either.

Should Liverpool go on to lift the Premier League title this season, the point will look a whole lot better in hindsight.

What both sets of supporters can agree on is that one player in particular on either side did them proud for one last time in a Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park.

Everton fans surely loved Abdoulaye Doucoure’s insistence at taunting the Liverpool end after the full-time whistle, while the away support anointed Curtis Jones after his passionate defence of them.

For some, the scenes at the full-time whistle, which included a mass brawl sparked by Doucoure and Jones, were unsavoury. But for former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch, it was exactly what this fixture is all about.

Crouch does have a derby goal at Goodison to his name having bagged during a 3-1 win in December 2005.

That was the lanky striker’s only goal in five appearances against the Toffees.

Still a Liverpool supporter to this day, though, Crouch clearly enjoyed Wednesday’s ‘throwback’ derby.

And speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast this week, the 44-year-old admitted that he was pleased to see Jones sticking up for the Liverpool supporters at the end.

“What an unbelievable game,” said Crouch. “It was just a throwback.”

“Even when it kicked off at the end. I say no one wants scenes like that at the end but we do and it makes a derby.

“Obviously, what Doucoure did, you can understand why he did it, because it’s an aggressive derby. But I thought what Curtis Jones did was fantastic as well, he’s like ‘how dare you do that to our fans’ and that’s what you want from a derby I think. You want to see that.”

Crouch reveals texts from long-lost Everton friends

As well as speaking out in support of the beleaguered Jones, Crouch also revealed what some of his Everton-supporting friends had done to him following Wednesday’s result.

“I’m mates with a few Evertonians and they reignited a Whatsapp group that has been dormant for, I reckon, best part of a year, I forgot I even had it,” said the former England international.

“But there’s a couple of Blues on there who reignited it from nowhere with a couple of emojis, all kicking off, and I thought ‘you’ve reignited a Whatsapp group for a draw!'”

In the end, there is still a chance that this whole thing comes out with Liverpool as champions of England and Everton struggling to stay in the Premier League.
