How many assists Mo Salah needs to break Thierry Henry’s all-time Premier League record for Liverpool this season

Liverpool’s game against Everton on Wednesday is likely to be remembered for all the wrong reasons from a Reds point of view.

Although there were some good moments and it moved them a point further clear in the Premier League title race, 2-2 was ultimately a tough result to take.

Curtis Jones’ red card will become the stuff of legend, but even then, the midfielder has picked up a one-game ban for his actions. It cannot be taken as a positive.

There is still something to cling onto, though, and that is the continued excellence of Mohamed Salah.

Salah claimed a goal and an assist in the same game for the 40th time in Premier League history against Everton and gave himself more distance in the race for both Playmaker of the Year and the Golden Boot.

His assist for Alexis Mac Allister’s perfect header was Salah’s 14th of the league campaign. Joint record holders for a season Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne are now in his sights.

Mohamed Salah closing on Premier League assists record

Salah is having a phenomenal season, there’s no two ways about it. Even when he’s quiet in games, a decisive moment is just around the corner.

Amazingly, despite approaching his 33rd birthday, the Egyptian is statistically having his best ever season in terms of assists.

Mo has now set up 19 goals across all competitions, with 14 coming in the Premier League.

That is just six shy of both Henry and De Bruyne, who hit 20 assists each in the 2002/03 and 2019/20 seasons respectively.

Henry also scored 24 goals in that same season, which is widely regarded as being the best individual campaign in the division’s history.

With 22 goals and 14 assists with 14 games left to play, Salah has a real chance of surpassing the Arsenal legend this time.

Salah hits new personal best

Salah’s assist for Mac Allister on Wednesday meant he has hit a new personal best for assists in a Premier League season in 2024/25.

The No.11’s previous high tally was the 13 he registered in 2021/22. It’s clear that Mo has become more of a creative force as the years have progressed.

There is still a lot of work to do before Salah matches either Henry or De Bruyne. Plenty of forwards do not manage six assists in a whole season, let alone in 14 matches.

But at the rate Mo is going, you would be unwise to bet against him.

The 20-20 is on, and if Salah can win a second Premier League title with Liverpool as well, then Henry’s status as the league’s best ever player should be coming seriously under threat.
