The Merseyside derby is seen by many as one of the best derbies in English football.

Despite there now being a ‘gap’ between Liverpool and Everton, the two clubs have continued to give birth to a number of iconic moments over the years.

One of the Merseyside derbies highlight moments came back in 2012 at Goodison Park when Luis Suarez decided it would be a great idea to rattle the Everton crowd with his celebration.

After playing a part in Liverpool’s opening goal, the Uruguayan ran towards the Toffees bench and mocked David Moyes with a diving celebration – after the Everton boss talked about his diving tendencies prior to the game.

“I would (be concerned about Suarez) because I think he has got history,” Moyes told reporters before the match.

“But I am not the referee, I am not the one that (makes decisions). But I tell you what – it will turn the supporters away from football if they think players are conning their way to results.”

Now 13 years on from the iconic celebration, one ex-Liverpool player who was present that day has revealed what was said to Suarez in the aftermath.

Brad Jones reveals Luis Suarez was ‘laughing’ after iconic Goodison Park celebration

Neither side would come out on top, with the score ending 2-2, but some could argue Liverpool got one over their fierce rivals with Suarez’s celebration.

Brad Jones was part of the Reds squad and witnessed the Uruguayan’s antics first hand from the bench.

Speaking to Optus Sport, the former Aussie international reflected on Saurez’s Goodison Park celebration.

“Suarez was up to his antics again, which he was pretty well known for.”

Jones then revealed that the Liverpool squad had no clue about Suarez’s celebration plans and had to have a word with him after the game.

“Nah. After the game it was kind of like ‘maybe rein it in a little bit’, but he was just laughing. He didn’t care. He didn’t care what people thought.”

What did David Moyes think about Suarez’s celebration?

After watching his side fight back from two-nil down, Moyes was questioned about Suarez’s celebration post-match.

“I thought it was great. I would have probably done the same if I was the player. But I think he’s going to have to dive in front of a lot of managers. If we had won 3-2, I might have done one in front of him as well,” said Moyes.

When quizzed on whether he was right to bring up the diving issue in the first place, the Everton manager stated:

“I’ve got to say Phil Neville went down too easy so I have told him about. I think if you go down easy as a player, I think the manager should tell them and you don’t want to get a reputation for being that sort of player.”

Moyes will be back in the dugout for his 23rd Merseyside Derby on Wednesday evening and he will no doubt be hoping there’s no diving on display at Goodison Park.
