Phil Jagielka admits Arne Slot had every right to be ‘furious’ after Liverpool’s draw against Everton

Liverpool had to settle for a point in the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park after a late equaliser from James Tarkowski.

The Reds thought they’d won it after Mohamed Salah put them in front with less than 20 minutes left.

But Tarkowski pounced to make it 2-2 with a volley in the 98th minute of a 95 minute match.

There was some hope for Liverpool after the goal was subject to a VAR check for both an offside and a foul against Ibrahima Konate.

In the end, it was nothing doing and the Tarkowski goal stood. But there were serious questions over whether Liverpool had been hard done by.

Arne Slot was clearly furious on the touchline and let the officials know it. And after the Liverpool head coach was shown a red card following the final whistle, former Everton captain Phil Jagielka admitted that Slot might have had a point.

Arne Slot ‘furious’ over James Tarkowski goal

Liverpool fans should have known that something was coming. With the clock well over 98 minutes – despite only five being added on – there was something brewing.

When the ball came into the box, though, the defence should have simply dealt with it.

Konate may well have been pushed, but he could have been stronger. Virgil van Dijk was nowhere and Kostas Tsimikas got sucked in too easily.

Nevertheless, according to Jagielka on TNT Sports, Slot had every right to be angry.

“If I am Ibrahima Konate I am wanting a foul for that challenge,” said the former England centre-back. “You can see why Arne Slot was furious. There was a slight little nudge in the box and if that was my team I would be appealing. I would be getting sent off after the game too.”

“Slot always talks about staying composed but it seems like he lost a bit of his composure at the end there. That’s what a derby does to you.”

Rio Ferdinand agrees with Jagielka

Given how biased Jagielka was all evening long on TNT, it was surprise to hear him admit that there probably was a foul on Konate.

And a man who is even less used to holding his hands up where Liverpool are concerned, Rio Ferdinand, also agreed that the Reds had been hard done by.

“If I am Ibrahima Konate I am wanting a foul for that challenge,” said the former Man United man on commentary.

This is likely not the last we’ve heard of this. But with the game now done and dusted it will not help anyone of a Liverpool persuasion to keep rehashing things.
