It had the feeling of being an enormously big night on Wednesday as Liverpool headed to face Everton in the Merseyside Derby.

The Reds were due to take on the Blues in December, but strong winds meant the game had to be rearranged.

Under the lights for the final time at Goodison Park, Liverpool were always going to be faced with a hostile Everton crowd.

And that’s exactly what the Reds got, with the home supporters ensuring their ground was a bear pit for the final time against Liverpool.

Visiting their neighbours across Stanley Park once more, though, Liverpool fans were also determined to make their mark at Goodison.

And as the Reds settled in for a big evening, one famous face was spotted in the away end.

Luis Diaz’s dad gets stuck in

Liverpool melted under the pressure of Goodison when they arrived for Jurgen Klopp’s last visit to the stadium last April.

But that defeat remains the last time the Reds lost away from home in the Premier League. They’ve got some steel.

And the Liverpool fans were obviously keen to enjoy their final Merseyside Derby trip to Goodison.

Displaying ’30’ balloons in reference to the last time Everton won a major trophy and holding some tongue-in-cheek banners aloft as well, it was party time no matter the result.

And as per journalist Ian Doyle, the father of Luis Diaz – Mane Diaz – was in amongst the away fans.

“Can confirm Luis Diaz’s dad is in the away end this evening,” Doyle reports on X.

Arne Slot sticks with Diaz through the middle

Diaz senior would not have been impressed with what he saw from Liverpool during the opening moments at Goodison.

The Reds switched off early on to allow Beto a clean run through to slot past Alisson Becker.

Nevertheless, Liverpool woke up and hit back almost immediately, Alexis Mac Allister heading home a delicious Mohamed Salah cross.

As for Diaz, he was trusted to go through the middle of the Liverpool attack once again by Arne Slot.

Diaz was woeful against Plymouth Argyle on Sunday, but Slot kept faith with the Colombian at Everton. No impact just yet from Lucho, but he’ll hope to give his dad something to shout about in the second-half.
