Arne Slot’s side have been left with egg on their face following their disappointing FA Cup exit against Plymouth Argyle.

Slot made several changes against the Championship side, resting a number of key names ahead of the Merseyside derby.

There was no Mohamed Salah or Virgil van Dijk on the South Coast – providing an opportunity for Liverpool’s more fringe players to step up to the plate.

Those replacements however would flatter to deceive against Plymouth, with one Reds star in particular earning heavy criticism for his display.

With starting midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai allowed to stay at home, Reds boss Slot put his faith in Harvey Elliott to lead the Liverpool midfield.

The 21-year-old however would fail to provide the goods on the south coast, with a number of supporters highlighting his poor performance.

One fan said via X (formerly Twitter): “Harvey Elliott showed why Slot hasn’t given him a chance.”

“Games like these are why I can’t entertain Harvey Elliott in certain young player convos,” added another supporter.

Some fans even claimed it’s time for Liverpool to sell Elliott:

“Harvey Elliott won’t make it here. Just give up on him. Ship him to Brighton for £40m”

Another fan said: “I don’t think Harvey Elliott and Luis Diaz are good enough to play under Slot. Definitely wouldn’t mind replacing them two in the summer.”

Elliott’s FA Cup performance will do him no favours under Arne Slot

Slot was left frustrated at his side’s performance, and part of that frustration will no doubt lie at Elliott’s door as well.

The midfielder failed to make any sort of impact going forward – something which was shown by Liverpool’s poor attacking stats against Plymouth.

Positioned slightly deeper than usual, you would have expected Elliott to contribute defensively – the stats however show that wasn’t the case.

Having failed to stake his claim against the Championship’s bottom club, Elliott has done himself no favours in terms of climbing up the pecking order at Anfield.
