The Carabao Cup has often had a significant impact on the seasons of several teams.

Newcastle booked their place in the Wembley showpiece on Wednesday night as the Magpies overcame Arsenal with a 4-0 win on aggregate.

Liverpool or Tottenham are set to face the Tyneside club on March 16 with Spurs holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg which the Reds will have to turn around in front of their fans at Anfield.

Both teams need to win the contest for different reasons as Ange Postecoglou looks to keep hold of his job, while Slot could use Carabao Cup success to fuel the rest of the Merseyside club’s season.

Winning the competition has propelled teams to further glory in the past, although that is not a guarantee, which Liverpool found out last season.

Carabao Cup success could push Liverpool to the Premier League title

The immediate impact of this result would give Liverpool a big boost as the Reds have some tough fixtures on the horizon with away trips to Everton and Man City before facing Newcastle at home.

This run of fixtures could see the Merseyside club put some daylight between themselves and Arsenal, which may be key coming into a crucial part of the season.

Winning the Carabao Cup would be a massive boost to Slot’s squad and that success could propel Liverpool towards winning the Premier League.

Man City won the EFL competition four years in a row between 2018 and 2021, with Pep Guardiola’s team going on to win the English top flight in three of those four seasons.

Other clubs have benefited from winning the Carabao Cup in the past, therefore, it could have a big impact on the Reds’ season and fans will be happy to learn that Arne Slot wants to take his Liverpool team to Wembley.

There is also a negative side to the competition, which Liverpool experienced last season under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool’s 2023/24 campaign flatlined after Carabao Cup glory

Liverpool won their tenth League Cup crown last season as Klopp’s team defeated Chelsea during extra time courtesy of a Virgil van Dijk goal.

The Reds would remain undefeated in the five games that followed their Wembley success. However, the Merseyside club would flatline and with multiple defeats ruling them out of winning the other three competions they were competing for.

The competition has the potential to do that again to Slot’s team although there were other circumstances back then.

Klopp had multiple players out injured at the time, while Liverpool are only missing Trent Alexander-Arnold at present.

It will be interesting to see how the Carabao Cup affects Liverpool’s season over the coming weeks as Slot’s men are not treating the competition lightly.
